M&W: We’re Fantastic.

By: chris | February 25th, 2009

Due to popular demand (one person accounts for popular demand ’round these parts – we’re easy like that), comes something which has been posted before but is so undeniably brilliant it’s worth another go.

Mitchell & Webb, the eminently eminent British comedy duo, poke fun at the people (you know who you are) who inexplicably refer to their favorite sport team – often based on the number of glitzy trophies they can celebrate, the amount of marketing shoved down their throats and/or the prettiness of their uniforms – as “we”. Did we play in that game yesterday? Did we score that goal? Did we spend hours training? Did we come back from that injury? Did we do anything at all?

And no, video games don’t count.

I say “we” and I don’t see any reason why not to. As a fan you’re part of the team, in my opinion, and I know plenty of other people feel that way too.

I do this but I also readily acknowledge that it’s ridiculous.

I don’t have a problem with true fans using the “we” remark, its more the people that they focused on, who magically remember they like a team after they win something.

    Two words: Barca fans

“We are going to win La Liga”, “We were brought back by Juninho’s goal”, “We won many games thanks to Messi”. Everyone sorta-kinda has to say “we” but you aren’t the team, shut up.

I generally refer to Caley as we, and yes, I know its a bit ridiculous considering that I don’t play for them or work on their staff. But for fans that feel like they are part of their team, it seems natural. It’s not exclusive to the big-club fair-weather fans.

I’m a big fan of Mitchell & Webb (and heartily recommend Peep Show to anyone who hasn’t seen it already) but have to wonder: Does David Mitchell just flat out hate football?

Between this and his Sky Sports satire I get the feeling he’s not fond. It’s satire I know, but seems to be satire without any love.

He recently touched on the Scolari sacking in his Guardian column, but the main thing I took from that column is that he much prefers cricket.
