New Football Fad: Ball In Shirt Trick

By: chris | November 12th, 2008

Is this even legal? Does it matter? The ref let it go and it’s flat out brilliant. Although I’m sure this kid – seems to be a high school/youth game of some sort – isn’t the first to have tried such a thing. Too bad he’s got the box presence of Ade Akinbiyi* (or these guys) and the ball bounds into the waiting arms of a befuddled keeper.

I hope this thing catches on. Waiting with great anticipation for the first time Luca Toni starts lumbering towards the box from the circle looking like he’s in his third trimester.

* – I wrote this hours before Ade scored against Chelsea. Swear.

That is the best thing I have seen in a long time. I’m shocked to think someone in the Argentine clausura or somwhere hadn’t thought of this before.

I’d would be SO worth the yellow to plow into that kid and knock the shit out of him.

I am not sure if this is an official rule, but isn’t a player “suppose” to have his shirt tucked in while playing.

I know its rarely ever enforced, I have only seen it when a player is being subbed onto the field but then he immediately untucks it.

I’m *pretty* sure that Unsportmanlike Conduct would cover this one. I mean, I’m not a qualified ref or anything, but…

Would that not come under ‘obstructing the opposition in playing the ball’? I cant remember where I had seen this idea before, but it was illegal then too.

I think it’s illegal in the same way the “Blanco bounce” is illegal. It’s “retention of the ball”, blocking it illegally so as to prevent opposing players from reaching it.

In the Blanco case it depends on the ref, but the only way he can get away with it is by blocking the ball between his feet only for a short fraction of a second, enough in order to flick it up. (he can’t bunny hop and keep it blocked is what I’m saying)

I think that is wonderful. He should be commended for being clever and certainly not have anyone “knock the shit out of him”. Psycho…
