Actually the 3-4-1-2 is a consistent formation throughout the old communist countries.

Excellent article, by the way!

@chris & mele419 -- Well, we'll see what happens. I'm definitely rooting for Sheva to recapture his form, as he was a joy to watch at Milan. I'm just skeptical given his recent work with a sprint coach to try to get his legs back and his seeming mental waywardness over the last year or so. Agreed, though, that he's looked good for Ukraine--four goals in seven games is fine work, even if one was a penalty and one, if I remember right, came against Georgia. But you think he'll actually need to leave Chelsea in order to excel at club level again? Any thoughts on whether or not he will?

Sheva is not finished at all. He just isn't cut out for the EPL and Chelsea. If he moves back to Serie A, he'll tear it apart. La Liga... Destroyed. Put him anywhere else and Sheva will tear it the f*ck up.

I'm not promoting the use of a 3-5-2, it was just there as an example as a way of accentuating the offensive capabilities of the side - which are enormous. You could take out Kobiashvili and throw in a CB to make it more balanced. Either way, though, I think it has to be played to the wings.

And watching Sheva for Ukraine gave me zero indication he's finished. Still highly dangerous.

Shevchenko is close to done in my opinion (living in London is not what's taken away his ability to run) but Kerzakhov/Voronin would be an interesting duo up front. I agree with Ian, though; playing in this formation this side is going to leak goals. It would be a lot of fun to see whether they could score enough to make it worth their while.

That would be an amazing side, but amazing enough to play only three backs? I'd want to see three strikers, two of them Andriys.
