Nike Poses A Question: Love Him or Hate Him?

By: chris | January 13th, 2009

Every time Cristiano Ronaldo hits the news there’s a mix of fangirl gushing and spiteful groaning which would have George W. Bush feeling loved by comparison. For this generation - and this is good, because he’s just getting started - he is the ultimate love him or hate him player. There’s not a whole lot of middle ground here. And you can appreciate his talents but still loathe his very soul, which I’m sure is the case with a fair few here. So Nike posed the question, and now we do the same: love him or hate him?

Love or hate CR7?
( polls)

* - And he doesn’t even need a disguise here to vote.

No Musab, I think plenty of people hate him because he’s a terrible fucking arrogant prick of a human being.

I never minded his antics until the “I’m the first, second, and third best player in the world” comment. That A-hole.

some of you sound pretty lame. calling him a prick and what not, lol. your only justification for hating him is based on how he supposedly ‘acts’ and his personality. nothing really to do with his game, haha..

I think its so f##king awesome how confident he is in himself. its so over the top at times you cant do anything but appreciate it. and im not even a United fan, i just think the kid is a great talent. He can do it all: score with both feet, tremendous in the air, pace for days, can hit free kicks, the tricks, the touch, etc. and all this from a winger!…. when he leaves look how average the likes of rooney become.

The fact that this is even a question means there is something wrong with him… Anyone with those types of skills coupled with an ounce of character would be no doubt best and most loved in the world… Unfortunately Ronaldo is lacking that ounce as evident by his comments, demeanor, bitching and moaning, diving, choking in big games, failing to be a leader for Portugal, etc…

so if the guy rubs you the wrong way, then there’s gotta be something wrong him then, right? ahh okay, i get it now. how pretentious and uppity.

and ‘character’ is subjective. everybody’s definition is a little different. The sensitive types usually are the ones who care about it the most. and really it doesnt make a shred of difference on the pitch. Rational fans who dont base their opinions on emotions, know this.

diving, bitching, moaning, choking, etc., cristiano isnt the first footballer and surely wont be the last who does these things. Gerrard does most of these things as well but no one seems to complain. So once again, its all subjective. hate on his game all you want but dont let the personal feelings get in the way.

Of course ive been watching him. I admit hes not as good as he was last season when he was an absolute god, but hes still a great winger, better than 99% of all the other wingers in this world.

Who cares if hes arrogant. Hes the greatest player in the world, hes allowed that right.

If Messi was bitching and moaning, diving, choking in big games. I’ll hate him too :) . What kills it for Ronaldo. HIS EGO is bigger than his talent. THATS A FACT people.
O & I’ve never have loved to hate someone that much since Paris Hilton.

bobby_digital… your point would be valid if I was one of the few who felt this way but the majority of the football world agrees on this. TBH there should have been no other mention of a competitor for all of these awards because Messi was hurt most of last year. But there was because most people do not want to see such a disgraceful player win these awards. I really think if Messi had stayed healthy and had better stats, even without winning the UCL, he would have won the awards

I don’t hate him, but I do hate some of the things he does. There’s a clear distinction. I do think he can be like a little boy sometimes, but it’s no wonder with the way he’s been put up on a pedestal for a long time, as with many talented footballers. Mainly he needs to grow a little more. The rest of the hate is just people being jealous or disliking him for his ’style’ which, c’mon, are you twelve?

I’m not a fan of him. I appreciate he’s good with his tricks, but he does disappear in big games. More antagonizingly (new word!), he dives and whines. In my opinion, he does not play with integrity or honor. I don’t “hate” him, I simply ignore him.

i guess we’ll have to agree to disagree. Cus im really only interested in results and what is actually done on the pitch. When your breaking scoring records from the wing and leading your club to titles, everything else can be overlooked, imo. And so what if your throwing orgy’s with high quality hooker’s and bedding broads left and right. live life and enjoy!. hahaha…

and the over the top ego and confidence is refreshing!. especially when it can be backed up. just for the simple fact he rubs so many people the wrong way and he doesn’t seem to give a sh!t either way. lool

for all those people who say they would beat him up and punch him, even if you caught him (which you wouldn’t), he would then physically dismantle your body. The guy is built like a rolls royce… Jamie Redknapp once said, ‘people say why don’t you just kick him, but you couldn’t, you would bounce off him’. All the ‘pansy’ comments thrown his way are so ironic, if you see him in real life, you would understand he is naturally built athlete.

secondly, you say how his character and ego are so awful. The majority of premier league footballers are absolute pricks. Most are idiots with a lot of money because they can play football. Why should his character come into this?

I hope and wish every English football fan, including scousers, will realise you would much rather have him in the premier league than la liga. Just like it was a loss when Henry left, I hated him because he played for Arsenal, but he was fantastic and he bought so much to the league. Beating Arsenal meant so much more because Henry was playing, as it should be with Manchester United and Ronaldo.

Love to hate him, don’t just hate him. He brings joy to people all over the world with his ability.

Lissette is spot on. If he weren’t so controversial due to his outlandish behavior, there wouldn’t even be a “poll”.

bobby - you’re right. results on the pitch DO matter. so, when we examine his world class talent, we also need to examine his world class diving. he has also done some pretty questionable things on the pitch. just ask teammate Rooney ala’ Portugal-England. Wink, wink! he’s also known to be just as dirty as some of the tackles put on him. and of course he’s had plenty of inexplicable, boneheaded moments.

there’s such a heated debate about him due to the fact that the only thing larger than his paycheck is his ego. he puts himself above the team (Real Madrid Summer Saga) and doesn’t really believe in the concept of “team”.

the popular term “form is temporary, class is permament” certainly rings true in his case. he had a great EPL season, bringing an already formidable ManU side to the league title and the CL (although he missed his PK). The second half of ‘08 was certainly lackluster. furthermore, he hasn’t really established himself with the NT. there have certainly been times this season, where people have questioned his desire to even be on the pitch…and there’s your tell-tale statement.

a true champion never has their will and determination questioned. with the pretty boy, there’s always a question of whether the good one will show up, or the disinterested one. in that regard, it’s more likely to compare him to Cassano rather than the true greats who have been PROFESSIONALS in all facets of the game. on and off the pitch.

I think it pathetic the way people base their opinions from what they hear on the media. I mean, some of the arguments on here so far were made-up quotes like the “i’m the first, second and third best footballer.”
Sure, you may not like his style of play or his behaviour on the pitch, but going as far as saying you don’t like his “character” is ignorant and idiotic, none of you know him. Actually, from the testimonies of people who DO know him, he seems like a humble, ambitious, hard-working guy.

Lilian - what in the world have you been watching? You’re less likely to find the words “humble” and “cristiano ronaldo” in the same sentence as you are “Lichtenstein” and “World Cup Champions”.

Seriously, that is the most absurd comment I’ve seen so far on this post.
