Shedding Light on how not to be a Thief
By: Bob | April 27th, 2007
With so many people related to football doing so many stupid things, it is never easy for our Idiot of the Week taskforce to make its selection for this dubious honor. This week was no exception, but in the end we had to go with a German man named Johann Stark who has once again proven that there is no such thing as a smart captured criminal.
Stark decided that it would be a good idea to break into the office of an amateur football club and, well, Off the Ball takes it from there.
Stark, 46, pulled off his fiendish stunt when he forced his way into the home of amateur club FC Germania Freund at the dead of night. Unfortunately, the mistakes started straight away. “He had no torch and turned on the first light switch that he could find; the switch to the floodlights of the club’s football pitch,” said a police spokesperson. Neighbours, mindful of the fixture list, smelt a rat when they noticed the lights on at 3am and the following morning contacted the groundsman. Cunning Stark had stuck a key in the inside lock meaning that the club’s custodian could not make his way in. But he called the cops who found said trespasser enjoying breakfast in the club restaurant, having already made somewhat of a mess outside by turning on the pitch sprinkler system. The baffled law enforcers admitted: “We have never caught a burglar quite like this.”
Our runner-up prize goes to Xiamen Lanshi defender Gabriel Melkam for bringing “ negative influence to bear on (Chinese) society”.
