Now That’s A Proper Pitch Invasion

By: chris | August 11th, 2009

This video really needs no words, as it’s destined for YouTube infamy.

But you know, plenty of people invade pitches. They run on, get their moment in the sun, maybe attack a player or two, spend a few hours in the slammer, but few, if any, truly leave a mark. This Copa Sudamericana fan – perhaps of Blooming (Bolivia), the team which was down 1-0 at home – took exception to a Uruguayan River Plate’s Henry Gimenez (not the goal scorer, it should said) and decided an attack was in order, and at least got his money’s jail time’s worth. (He was wielding what looks to be a weapon, which means super jail time for this overzealous fella.)

Not that it isn’t deplorable or anything. As a result, the game was immediately called off and the second leg is in jeopardy.

Also: South American football needs a serious time out.

That’s nuts – what was he carrying? Looked like he dropped whatever it was when the police nabbed him. the club should be fined big time, and docked points – pretty much the only way you are going to stamp out behaviour like that,
