Now You Can Stroll Down Puskás Ferenc utca

Hungarian legend Ferenc Puskás now has a street named after him in Budapest. To mark the one year anniversary of his passing (November 17th 2006) Budapest mayor Gabor Demszky led a ceremony renaming a street (pictured) in Budapest’s 19th district Puskás Ferenc utca. Puskás shone for Honved, Real Madrid, Hungary and - incredibly - Spain. You know you’re a legend when they let you play for two different national teams. The Galloping Major and his lethal left foot have an astonishing record of 358 goals in 349 appearances for Honved, 156 goals in 180 appearances for Real Madrid and 84 goals in 85 appearances for Hungary. You don’t need me to tell you that these figures are all insanely good.
I was lucky enough to be in Budapest in 2002 when the Népstadion was renamed Stadion Puskás Ferenc in his honour. The great man did an open top car parade around the pitch and I’ve never seen a crowd give so much love to one man. To see just how accurate his left foot was, here’s a clip of the man in action, scoring four goals in Real’s 7-3 1960 European Cup Final win over Eintracht Frankfurt.
