Offside Sound-Off: 15 Questions For The Fans

By: chris | February 26th, 2008

1204042515_swissfans.jpgThis little experiment was hugely successful over at the Roma offside and now Steve from Palermo and Corey from Real Madrid have given their input as well. It starts out with 15 simple questions about past memories, present loves and future hopes for your footballing heart. I’ve sorta generalized so that’s it’s easy enough for fans of any team to answer. Originally courtesy of reader Tick x 3.

1.) All time World Cup moment?
2.) One match in the history of your most beloved team you wish you had attended?
3.) One scoreline you wish you could reverse for your favorite team?
4.) Five favorite players for your favorite team, past or present?
5.) Five players to have never played for your team, past or present?
6.) Maradona or Pele?
7.) Maldini or Beckenbauer?
8.) Cruijff or Eusebio?
9) Yashin or Buffon?
10.) Least favorite player of all time, past or present?
11.) Do you have a second club?
12.) One player right now you would add to your team, past or present, dead or alive?
13.) One football dream you wish to see in your lifetime?
14.) Most prized football possession?
15.) Finally, who is the best player in the world right now?

(My answers for the Italian version, in case you’re wondering.)

    1) From an England point of view Beating Argentina in 2002 after the agony of 1998 was unforgettable.
2)For my beloved Bristol Rovers I really wish I could have made the play-off final last year.
3)Any time we have lost to City.
    4) Andy Tilson, Jamie Cuereton, Nigel Martyn, Ian Holloway, Gary Penrice
    5) Cruyff, Gazza, Totti, Maldini, Cantona
    6) Pele.
    7) Well I have only seen clips of Beckenbauer, and he looks absolutely immense, but Maldini is a real hero of mine. So i’ll take Maldini. But my dream defense would include them both
    8) Cruyff. I’d take him over Maradonna or Pele as well : http://cl.theoffside.com/great-european-cup-players/great-european-cup-players-1-johan-cruyff.html
    9) Its pretty much a toss up I reckon. I think in ten years I’ll be saying Gigi, but I’ll say Yashin for now.
    10) There’s been alot down the years I suppose. Out of current world class player, I’m not keen on Gerrard.
    11) Yeah. Bristol Rovers are my club, where I grew up and who’ll I’ll always support, but when I watch Serie A, Roma is my team. I like Barca when watching Spanish football as well. Growing up I kinda had a soft spot for Man United as well, no doubt cemented by the fact that I live in Manchester. It goes with countries too for me - After England go out, I always support Italy in reference to the ‘94 World Cup where I picked them as my team. I like the current Portugal team though.
    12) Cruyff. At Number 14. As Player Manager.
    13) To see England Win the World Cup, Bristol Rovers to be a biggish club, To see many great Champions League, Euro’s and World Cups before i kick the bucket
    14) My match programme of Bristol Rovers Vs Everton in the Carling Cup. Not only did I get to see Gazza in the flesh, but we won on pens in the pissing rain.
    15) Last season it was Kaka just ahead of Ronaldo and Totti. Kaka’ hasn’t been as good this season, Totti not recovered from his injury. Ronaldo has been class. Messi and Ibrohimovic have been class. Fabragas started amazingly. So I’d probably say Ronnie, just ahead of Kaka’ and Ibrohimovic with Cesc and Totti just behind.

    1. Zidane sent off during World Cup Final in 2006.

    3. Germany - Poland in World Cup ‘06 when we lost to Teutons 1:0 in stoppage time. Draw would gave us hope for promotion…
    4. Cristiano Ronaldo, Cantona, Best, Messi, Zidane
    5. Materazzi, Puyol, Terry, Ronaldo, Stevie G
    6. Maradona
    7. Maldini

1.) All time World Cup moment?
All of WC 2006. I waited so long to finally see Italy win something and that whole World Cup was magical, from the group games, the to last minute penalty vs Australia, to the drubbing of Ukraine, to Grosso v Germany, to the Final. It was all magical.

2.) One match in the history of your most beloved team you wish you had attended?
May 16, 2004- Milan-Brescia, Milan celebrates their 17th Scudetto and it was Roberto Baggio’s last game ever. I would’ve gotten to partake in Scudetto celebrations and see my favorite player of all time in his swan song and give him a standing ovation.

3.) One scoreline you wish you could reverse for your favorite team?
It’s definitely the Champions League final vs. Liverpool in 2005. I still don’t know how we let that one slip away.

4.) Five favorite players for your favorite team, past or present?
    1)Paolo Maldini
    2)Andriy Shevchenko
    3)Gennaro Gattuso
    4)SuperPippo Inzaghi
    5)Andrea Pirlo
The current generation of Milan stars has really taken over my 1990’s Milan idols.

5.) Five players to have never played for your team, past or present?
    1) Francesco Totti
    2) Gigi Buffon
    3) Gianfranco Zola
    4) Antonio Cassano
    5) Luca Toni

    6.) Maradona or Pele?
Hands down Diego Maradona. Such a sublime talent.

    7.) Maldini or Beckenbauer?
    Paolo Maldini, I’m a Milanista.

    8.) Cruijff or Eusebio?
Eh, no feelings for either two, but I guess I’d go with Cruijff.

    9) Yashin or Buffon?
Buffon, he’s the greatest keeper in the world right now and the greatest keeper of all time.

10.) Least favorite player of all time, past or present?
I’ve always hated Pavel Nedved and Thierry Henry the most.

11.) Do you have a second club?
    Parma- http://parma.theoffside.com

12.) One player right now you would add to your team, past or present, dead or alive?
It’s a toss up between Roberto Baggio and Diego Maradona.

13.) One football dream you wish to see in your lifetime?
Well, I’ve seen Italy win the World Cup, I’ve seen Milan win the Scudetto, Champions League, and other trophies, I’ve even seen Parma win the UEFA Cup and other trophies. I guess I’m kind’ve of “spoiled”. But I guess I’d want Italy to win a European Championship, it’s long overdue, it’s already been 40 years since the last one. And another World Cup wouldn’t hurt. :)

    14.) Most prized football possession?
1994 Italy home jersey autographed by Roberto Baggio.

15.) Finally, who is the best player in the world right now?
    Andrea Pirlo

1.) All time World Cup moment?
Stuart Pearce shooting at Bodo Illgner in the World Cup 1990 semi-final. Pretending that Illgner actually did anything to save the shot. Then declaring him a hero and subsequently becoming a fan of FC Cologne. I later found comfort in the fact that Pierre Littbarski and Thomas Hässler were playing for Cologne as well. More recently: Oliver Neuville’s late late late goal against Poland WC 2006.
2.) One match in the history of your most beloved team you wish you had attended?
Cologne beating Bayern 4-0 at home 1990/1991.
3.) One scoreline you wish you could reverse for your favorite team?
For my favorite team it’s probably the DFB Pokal final in 1991. Otherwise I would just like to reverse the scoreline of Hamburg-Bayern matchday 34 2000/2001.
4.) Five favorite players for your favorite team, past or present?
    Littbarski, Hässler, Banach, Podolski, Novakovic
5.) Five players to have never played for your team, past or present?
    -
    6.) Maradona or Pele?
    Pele.
    7.) Maldini or Beckenbauer?
    Beckenbauer.
    8.) Cruijff or Eusebio?
    Cruijff.
    9) Yashin or Buffon?
    -
10.) Least favorite player of all time, past or present?
    Stefan Effenberg.
11.) Do you have a second club?
Nope. Though I have sympathies for a lot of clubs.
12.) One player right now you would add to your team, past or present, dead or alive?

1.) All time World Cup moment?
    Watching: France v. Brazil 1986.
    In Person: Romania in 2004.
Qualifying in person? Colombia 5 Argentina 0. That one hurt.

2.) One match in the history of your most beloved team you wish you had attended?
Real Betis winning the Copa Del Rey.

3.) One scoreline you wish you could reverse for your favorite team?
USA 0 Italy 1 in 1990. Why not!

4.) Five favorite players for your favorite team, past or present? (Real Betis Balompie)
    1)Joaquin
    2) Prats
    3)Edu
    4)Pumpido
    5)Jarni

5.) Five players to have never played for your team, past or present?
    Pick ‘em.

    6.) Maradona or Pele?
Diego Maradona, for his time; Pele for the length of his career. Like voting for best hitter between Ted Williams (career twice interrupted by military service) or Babe Ruth. I’d say that Maradona carried 10 men on his midget back on a number of occasions (86, 90, 94–look what happened when he failed the drug test–Napoli, Bosteros)…those were significant accomplishments!

    7.) Maldini or Beckenbauer?
Maldini, easy. I think many underestimate how GREAT Maldini has been.

    8.) Cruijff or Eusebio?
    Only saw Cruijff play.

    9) Yashin or Buffon?
    Buffon.

10.) Least favorite player of all time, past or present?
Andres D’Alessandro (biggest baby I’ve ever seen play). Maybe Hugo Sanchez in a tie.

11.) Do you have a second club?
    Racing Club (Argentina)

12.) One player right now you would add to your team, past or present, dead or alive?
Again, pick ‘em. Maradona in his prime or a guy like Zidane. Right now? I’ll go out of left field and say an in-form Michael Essien.

13.) One football dream you wish to see in your lifetime?
For De Lopera to just go away (not going to happen). USA progressing in international competitions…that’ll probably happen at some point.

    14.) Most prized football possession?
1988 Racing Club jersey or 1991 Betis scarf.

15.) Finally, who is the best player in the world right now?
    C. Ronaldo all around; L Messi or F Torres for jaw dropping flair and finishing and future promise.

    16) (My added one) Most hated club(s)?
Real Franco and Sevilla in a tie.
    Most hated fans?
Personally? Boca…and then their bandwagon “lifetime fans” from across the world. “La mitad mas 1″ is a bunch of crap!

    Have a nice weekend everybody.
