Offside Sound-Off: Who Should Your Team Sign This Summer?
By: Daryl | June 23rd, 2009
Rob posed this same question to Premier League fans over the weekend, but I wanted to steal his idea open it up to fans of all teams.
Who should your team (realistically) sign this season?
Obviously Cristiano Ronaldo and Kaka are off the menu. We know where they’ll be playing next season. And there’s no way Leo Messi’s going anywhere. But there are plenty of other big (and not so big) names available this summer.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic could be on the move. Great signing for someone (provided you don’t plan going too deep into the Champions League). Carlos Tevez is definitely available after saying thanks but no thanks to Man Utd. Even Samuel Eto’o might be up for grabs, if he ever figures out what he wants.
There are bargains to be had too. Michael Owen is available for zero money down, and anyone interested can browse the embarrassing brochure. Laugh all you like, the little man is still a potentially brilliant signing for someone.
And then there’s the clearout at Real Madrid, where the policy is “If it’s Dutch, it’s for sale”. Could your team use a Ruud van Nistelrooy, Wesley Sneijder, Rafael van der Vaart or Arjen Robben?
And it’s not all about the big teams and big names of course. Every team will be looking to strengthen this season.
So let us know in the comments:
1. Who your team is, and
2. Who they should sign this summer

i follow a couple teams, so heres a rundown for each:
Lyon – Ricardo Quaresma or Lisandro Lopez
Juventus – Wesley Sneijder or Jose Bosingwa
Liverpool – keep Alonso & Mascherano, sign Alvaro NegredoPosted from

Arsenal should sign Zlatan. Buck up, put down some real cash (they have it) and sign a superstar. Use the sulking Adebayor as trade leverage – both players want to leave their respective leagues/teams. That or a decent defensive midfielder – perhaps Senna?

P.S. I’m NOT in Friggin’ Canada. NYC!

Wolves – Kevin Doyle/Michael Mancienne
Why? – The other best striker from the championship, going up with the leagues’ best striking partnership wouldn’t go far wrong with giving us a stab at staying up. And with Michael, while I know he’s been a bit off his game in the U21s (hopefully lowring his fee) we know that’s just because he’s been sitting on Chelski’s albeit plush subtitute bench since January, when he was with us, he was an utter star.
That’d do me if we could sign those two and no one else all transfer window to be honest, chuck in a decent tough CM and we’re in business.

Chelsea.
Pato—sounds like he loves Ancelotti and he’s a great, young prospect who could help as we have Drogba and Anelka not getting any younger, Shevchenko returning who won’t find many games, Kalou who is up and down and Di Santo who needs a bit more time.

AZ: Sign Michael Owen(not that realistic, but at least he plays Champion’s League)
Vfl Wolfsburg: Suarez, Owen (same reason), keep Grafite and Dzeko.Posted from

Arsenal should get Melo or Toure to play in that holding position. And a good striker who can finish maybe Dzeko or Huntelaar plus Robben(only for a bargain)

Bayern — Anybody interested in signing an Italian striker, slightly used, excellent facial expression and gesturing skills?

Celtic seem to be thinking about Fletcher, but Gudjohnsen is available for the same price and is twice the player! I really want to see young James McCarthy in the Hoops next season.

corbin’s plan is completely unrealistic for Juve.
Juve should sign Criscito (on loan at Genoa), D’Agostino, and Motta.
Juve probably will sign Grosso, D’Agostino, and ?

to alessio:
criscito likely isn’t coming back. we desperately need a RB, and wantaway bosingwa could do the trick, especially if chelsea can steal maicon. sneijder, at a discount, playing across from diego would be huge. camo’s getting up there and at the very least, he would provide a serious upgrade over marchionni

Barca- Mascherano, Villa, and a LB (Felipe).
I think these additions would make an already great team… legendary!

Criscito likely isn’t coming back, hence why I said we should bring him back, but we probably won’t.
Boswinga would cost far too much and he’s a bit of a loose cannon, and Sneidjer has no place in our team. (he’s never impressed me either) 4-3-1-2 will be the formation next year, and that 1 is well covered.

chelsea- villa is definitely not gonna happen, which is the signing i was hoping for the most. ribery would be nice, but our weakest position is not out on the wing (kalou, anelka has adapted to this position quite nicely, and who can forget malouda’s great turnaround this season) what we really need is a striker, and i think pato is the best fit. if not pato, i would be open to aguero or huntelaar. finally, i think our midfield could use some bolstering come african cup of nations time (essien and mikel will be gone for a crucial part of the season) and while i disagree with signing geezers, i believe pirlo could be a good fit for that time period, and we could get him relatively cheap.

Chelsea FC:
*Zhirkov/Pavlyuchenko: If these transfers were desperately wanted, Roman could make it happen without question. The problem is that these were buys recommended by Guus Hiddink, who wants to see his Russian nationals get more world-class play time. If Guus were still in the head coaching position, I would be more hopeful, as these players would recieve a ton of developmental help. But why get them if Guus won’t be there? Pavlyuchenko is 27, after all.
Arjen Robben/Antonio Valencia: Unfortunately, I do not share Erik’s optimism about Chelsea’s situation on the wing. Kalou is inconsistently brilliant, and Anelka isn’t a superb winger. If Kalou stays, then he can come off the bench for Drogba, and Niko should be thinking about retirement altogether. Robben always liked the club, and was sad to go. The guy is still 25, has a ton of speed and ball control, and is a scoring threat. Valencia is a great prospect, and an effort should be put in to get him away from united.
Aguero/Pato/Huntelaar: The bottom line is that someone needs to play next to Drogba. D-Drog is strictly a power-forward. Most of his goals come from muscling defenders off of a grounded pass, turning around, and slide-kicking the ball into the goal. THAT’S WHAT HE’S GOOD AT. To complement him, he needs to play next to someone in the Del Piero mold; a goal threat with CAM-esque ball control, who can score in his own right and cross it over to the Ivorian when the time comes. Villa wasn’t that kind of forward, so I’m not upset about him I’d prefer Aguero or Pato, but Huntelaar is an okay choice.

Inter-
1st, keep Zlatan! 2nd, Keep Maicon.
Then sign- Arnautovic, Essien, and FREDDY ADU!Posted from

I’d love to see Everton try to go after Wesley Sneijder — they could really use someone to complement Pienaar and allow a hopefully healthy Arteta to play in the middle. Unfortunately, my guess is that David Moyes is a bit sour on Dutch wingers at this point. Thanks for nothing, Andy van der Meyde! A nice pacy right back (Rod Fanni, maybe?) would be nice, too.

Milan
Antonio Cassano. With Kaka gone, Milan are going to need some creativity, pace and finish in the trequartista position. His last two seasons at Sampdoria have shown that he’s done a lot of growing up, and his talent is still there. The Italian core of the team seems to be dwindling as of late, so why not boost this by signing arguably Italy’s most talented forward?
Luis Fabiano or Emmanuel Adebayor. I realize that he may not be for sale at all, but I think that an attacking formation of Cassano behind Fabiano/Adebayor and Pato could be extremely successful. Cassano providing the imagination and creativity, Pato providing the pace and power, and Fabiano / Adebayor providing the 18-yard box prowess. That kind of offense in front of a midfield comprised of two hard working individuals (Flamini / Gatusso / Ambrosini) and the creative core of Pirlo, would certainly be dominant force in Europe!

oh, and maybe D’Agostino to be a future replacement for Pirlo… that would be great
