Offside SoundOff: Tell Us About Your “Fan Crush”
By: Laurie | December 3rd, 2008
It’s been ages since we’ve done an Offside SoundOff — the posts where you tell us a little bit about the beautiful game in your own life. Let’s remedy that, shall we?
This is the post where you use the comments to tell us about your “Fan Crush.”
A “fan crush” isn’t a crush-crush. Nothing romantic whatsoever. It’s a lot more like a “man-crush,” except it’s not gender-specific, and it’s all about play on the pitch. You might have a fan-crush if any of these apply to you:
- • You follow a club you wouldn’t otherwise care about because you love to watch a single player. Bonus points if you’ve dumped a team after they sold your favorite guy. Or gal — let’s not be sexist. I dragged myself out of bed more than once during the Olympics because I love watching Hope Solo in goal.
- • You lose interest in a game when you discover your player won’t be playing. Or, alternatively, you have watched an entire (otherwise boring) game in the vain hope that your player will be subbed in.
- You read post-match reports only when your player has had a good game.
- You would seriously consider standing in line for two hours with a bunch of twelve-year-olds for an autograph, even if it meant having to tell the player that it’s for a child who just happens to share your name. (Oh, come on, you know you’ve thought about it.)
And yes, I will admit to a few fan crushes. Patrice Evra is literally the only reason I watch Manchester United, and I spend entire matches just waiting for his speedy little zips up the left. And I don’t think I’d ever watch the New York Red Bulls except for Juan Pablo Angel. I have a huge admiration crush on the newly-retired Lilian Thuram — he’s the one I’d considering standing in line for while pretending it was for a daughter/niece/young friend.
My guilty fan-crush? The one I’d never tell people about? Jens Lehmann. I love Mad Jens. I find him endlessly entertaining.
Oh, and of course, last but not least, I have watched a fair number of entire Chelsea games (or worse, entire Bolton games last year) on the off chance that I’ll get to see Nicolas Anelka go one-on-one with the goalkeeper. It’s frequently for naught, but every once in awhile you get this, which makes it all worth it.
**Happy fan-crush sigh**
And now it’s your turn. Tell us about your fan crush. (Or, if that phrase makes you…uncomfortable? Tell us about your favorite player. No crush necessary.)

xabi alonso. i wake up early on the weekends to watch liverpool play. because of him, i’m utterly obsessed with the team. the reason i religiously followed spain during the euros and was only a little bit sad that germany lost to them (my home team).
christoph metzelder… it’s hard to watch german national games without him in the back 4. sigh, i miss metze.

Not exactly what I would call a fan crush, but if Michael Essien didn’t play for Chelsea, I would be a huge fan of his. As it is, I greatly respect his play and like to watch him play for Chelsea (when he’s healthy of course).

Ezequiel Lavezzi n Bobo Vieri. And, also, Colin, for his comment on Hargreaves.

Hakan Sukur. When I was a kid I was an A.C Milan fan, when Hakan went from Galatasaray to Inter, I locked away my old Red-Black jersey for a blue one. Then the bastards went and sent Hakan away. After Hakan gave an interview with the Turkish media of his bad times at Inter, I hated Inter and Materazzi more than any other team.
Similar kinda thing for Tugay Kerimoglu. I became a Blackburn fan after he joined them, where he’s still playing and scoring. True legend.

no john amechi @ mustafa’s love of torres…
personally i might be the only person in the world who isnt from mali that has a fan crush on the gladiator in the middle of the pitch known as MOMO SISSOKO… ive always had a soft spot for the bruising artistic ways of the defensive central midfielder.. the most underrated position… it started with patrick vieria then it became makelele…. but none of those fan crushes were like the one i have for Momo ‘african lion’ sissoko…
ever since i saw him straight turn michael ballack into a lil ho with a tackle in his liverpool days i was hooked.. for a while i was hurtin when he was injured and not getting minutes at liverpool but after his move to Juventus ive been tryin to watch Juve as much as i can just to see Momo do somethin so bone-headed and red card worthy that it is brilliant…
he goes into tackles with no regard for human life and goes for headers to straight punish the ball and any player who challenges him… he’d probably come in with a 2 footed tackle on his own mother just to stop her on a counter-attack..
one of the most underrated players in juve’s resurgence this season… ive even started callin the act of a bone shaking challenge or tackle a ’sissoko’… momo is the man and if u dont think so, i dare you to try a flashy move in his general vicinity.. he’ll turn your ankles into sawdust just off general principle…
MOMO SISSOKO aka the black plague aka the lion king aka mufasa aka shinguard destroyer aka AFFFFRIIIICAAAA…
*slide tackles his professor when he gets a bad grade*

Xabi Alonso…I can’t tell you how many times I’ve watched the Alonso “Pass Master” clip on Youtube–watching him distribute the ball around and dictate play from so deep in midfield never ceases to amaze me. Also, Maldini…I don’t even say anything when I watch him, I just observe because he’s so intelligent and his defensive technique so refined that I just have to shut up and watch to catch it all.

Henry, Henry, Henry…
Although even he doesn’t believe it anymore, he is actually the best player in the world!
Each time he plays for Barca I just hope that they score the most goals possible, and when they call Krkic instead of him I get angry and want them to be punished and loose badly!! It’s really, really, crazy..

Other players that have a similar effect on me:
Nihat (Villa), Tuncay (Boro).. (compatriotes)Posted from

Fabio Cannavaro. I have watched him play since he was at Napoli. I have endured Inter matches for this player. I currently watch the debacle that is Real Madrid for him. I just want him to go home to Napoli so I can watch my favourite player playing for my favourite club team (Napoli) and favourite national team (Azzurri).
I used to have a fan-crush on Michael Owen, but it’s been so bleak for the past few years that I’ve weaned myself off of him.

No one in particular presently. I respect most all players and their abilities. However, for awhile it was Joy Fawcett. What can I say? I just couldn’t help but to cheer on a someone whom (in such a short period of time) earned a degree from UC Berkeley, had three children plus played in 3 World Cups and 2 Olympics.

Paolo Maldini has kept me watching Milan all these years, even when they make me want to throw large heavy objects at my television screen. Same with Sandro Nesta, although I’ll admit I never noticed him before he moved to Milan (not being an Azzurri fan).
Zlatan Ibrahimovic makes me watch Inter every weekend, even though a) I hate them; b) I really, really hate Mourinho; c) 90% of the time he’s crap. Every once in a while he does something so brilliant it’s worth it.
I have been known to watch Valencia games solely for David Villa.
As a newly-minted die-hard Viola fan, I will confess that my like of Riccardo Montolivo has gone from “fan-crush” to “would be willing to wait outside his hotel all night in the cold just to scream his name in the morning”. Don’t tell anyone. I have a reputation to uphold.Posted from

Mathieu Flamini. I am an Arsenal and Inter fan, but I watch AC Milan play soley to watch Flamini. It’s breaking my heart.

Steven, Martha’s still here, but she has changed allegiances and come over to the dark side. She’s writing on a…a…brace yourself… A French team.

De Rossi and Totti. HUGE crushes on them. Works very well being a Roma fan. Also Petr Cech. Nobody could sport headgear like he can. Keeper crushes- Cech, Casillas, Buffon. Great keepers. I also have a weak spot for Stevie-g.
Im in love with way too many.

Totti, Buffon, Messi, Ronaldinho, Cannavaro, Nesta, DDR and Maldini (even when he turns 70 and has jibbly chin).
The guilt semi-crush that I wont admit in public: Ballack.
(coz I cant support Chelski except over ManU, and cant support Germany except over ahem..England.)
