Offside SoundOff: Tell Us About Your “Fan Crush”

By: Laurie | December 3rd, 2008

It’s been ages since we’ve done an Offside SoundOff — the posts where you tell us a little bit about the beautiful game in your own life. Let’s remedy that, shall we?

This is the post where you use the comments to tell us about your “Fan Crush.”

A “fan crush” isn’t a crush-crush. Nothing romantic whatsoever. It’s a lot more like a “man-crush,” except it’s not gender-specific, and it’s all about play on the pitch. You might have a fan-crush if any of these apply to you:

  • • You follow a club you wouldn’t otherwise care about because you love to watch a single player. Bonus points if you’ve dumped a team after they sold your favorite guy. Or gal — let’s not be sexist. I dragged myself out of bed more than once during the Olympics because I love watching Hope Solo in goal.
  • • You lose interest in a game when you discover your player won’t be playing. Or, alternatively, you have watched an entire (otherwise boring) game in the vain hope that your player will be subbed in.
  • You read post-match reports only when your player has had a good game.
  • You would seriously consider standing in line for two hours with a bunch of twelve-year-olds for an autograph, even if it meant having to tell the player that it’s for a child who just happens to share your name. (Oh, come on, you know you’ve thought about it.)

And yes, I will admit to a few fan crushes. Patrice Evra is literally the only reason I watch Manchester United, and I spend entire matches just waiting for his speedy little zips up the left. And I don’t think I’d ever watch the New York Red Bulls except for Juan Pablo Angel. I have a huge admiration crush on the newly-retired Lilian Thuram — he’s the one I’d considering standing in line for while pretending it was for a daughter/niece/young friend.

My guilty fan-crush? The one I’d never tell people about? Jens Lehmann. I love Mad Jens. I find him endlessly entertaining.

Oh, and of course, last but not least, I have watched a fair number of entire Chelsea games (or worse, entire Bolton games last year) on the off chance that I’ll get to see Nicolas Anelka go one-on-one with the goalkeeper. It’s frequently for naught, but every once in awhile you get this, which makes it all worth it.

**Happy fan-crush sigh**

And now it’s your turn. Tell us about your fan crush. (Or, if that phrase makes you…uncomfortable? Tell us about your favorite player. No crush necessary.)

David Villa, David Beckham... also Edwin van der Saar, and I'm a Chelsea fan xD

Totti, Buffon, Messi, Ronaldinho, Cannavaro, Nesta, DDR and Maldini (even when he turns 70 and has jibbly chin).

The guilt semi-crush that I wont admit in public: Ballack.
(coz I cant support Chelski except over ManU, and cant support Germany except over ahem..England.) :)
  • Alex
De Rossi and Totti. HUGE crushes on them. Works very well being a Roma fan. Also Petr Cech. Nobody could sport headgear like he can. Keeper crushes- Cech, Casillas, Buffon. Great keepers. I also have a weak spot for Stevie-g.

Im in love with way too many.
  • Blr Gooner
Gooner through and through, but it surprises me that nobody has mentioned Jay Jay Okacha yet. That man was simply awesome.
  • Steven, Martha's still here, but she has changed allegiances and come over to the dark side. She's writing on a...a...brace yourself... A French team. :-)
  • Amanda
Mathieu Flamini. I am an Arsenal and Inter fan, but I watch AC Milan play soley to watch Flamini. It's breaking my heart.
  • Angharad
Paolo Maldini has kept me watching Milan all these years, even when they make me want to throw large heavy objects at my television screen. Same with Sandro Nesta, although I'll admit I never noticed him before he moved to Milan (not being an Azzurri fan).
Zlatan Ibrahimovic makes me watch Inter every weekend, even though a) I hate them; b) I really, really hate Mourinho; c) 90% of the time he's crap. Every once in a while he does something so brilliant it's worth it.
I have been known to watch Valencia games solely for David Villa.
As a newly-minted die-hard Viola fan, I will confess that my like of Riccardo Montolivo has gone from "fan-crush" to "would be willing to wait outside his hotel all night in the cold just to scream his name in the morning". Don't tell anyone. I have a reputation to uphold.
  • Martha, of former Offside Italy Fame. Love her. Wonder why she doesn't visit me more often.

    Joaquin and Damiano Tommasi bitches!
  • baller
    Sulley Muntari... What a beast.
  • Johnny
No one in particular presently. I respect most all players and their abilities. However, for awhile it was Joy Fawcett. What can I say? I just couldn't help but to cheer on a someone whom (in such a short period of time) earned a degree from UC Berkeley, had three children plus played in 3 World Cups and 2 Olympics.
  • KellyLD
Fabio Cannavaro. I have watched him play since he was at Napoli. I have endured Inter matches for this player. I currently watch the debacle that is Real Madrid for him. I just want him to go home to Napoli so I can watch my favourite player playing for my favourite club team (Napoli) and favourite national team (Azzurri).

I used to have a fan-crush on Michael Owen, but it's been so bleak for the past few years that I've weaned myself off of him.
  • - Tim-maC -
    Henry, Henry, Henry...

Although even he doesn't believe it anymore, he is actually the best player in the world! ;)

Each time he plays for Barca I just hope that they score the most goals possible, and when they call Krkic instead of him I get angry and want them to be punished and loose badly!! It's really, really, crazy..

    ---

Other players that have a similar effect on me:
    Nihat (Villa), Tuncay (Boro).. (compatriotes)

Gattuso! what a hard ass. he has so much passion when he plays. id let him kick my ass out of respect

shout outs to gareth barry, flamini, and ibrahimovic.

Xabi Alonso...I can't tell you how many times I've watched the Alonso "Pass Master" clip on Youtube--watching him distribute the ball around and dictate play from so deep in midfield never ceases to amaze me. Also, Maldini...I don't even say anything when I watch him, I just observe because he's so intelligent and his defensive technique so refined that I just have to shut up and watch to catch it all.
  • Mo
no john amechi @ mustafa's love of torres...

personally i might be the only person in the world who isnt from mali that has a fan crush on the gladiator in the middle of the pitch known as MOMO SISSOKO... ive always had a soft spot for the bruising artistic ways of the defensive central midfielder.. the most underrated position... it started with patrick vieria then it became makelele.... but none of those fan crushes were like the one i have for Momo 'african lion' sissoko...

ever since i saw him straight turn michael ballack into a lil ho with a tackle in his liverpool days i was hooked.. for a while i was hurtin when he was injured and not getting minutes at liverpool but after his move to Juventus ive been tryin to watch Juve as much as i can just to see Momo do somethin so bone-headed and red card worthy that it is brilliant...

he goes into tackles with no regard for human life and goes for headers to straight punish the ball and any player who challenges him... he'd probably come in with a 2 footed tackle on his own mother just to stop her on a counter-attack..

one of the most underrated players in juve's resurgence this season... ive even started callin the act of a bone shaking challenge or tackle a 'sissoko'... momo is the man and if u dont think so, i dare you to try a flashy move in his general vicinity.. he'll turn your ankles into sawdust just off general principle...

MOMO SISSOKO aka the black plague aka the lion king aka mufasa aka shinguard destroyer aka AFFFFRIIIICAAAA...

*slide tackles his professor when he gets a bad grade*
  • Hakan Sukur. When I was a kid I was an A.C Milan fan, when Hakan went from Galatasaray to Inter, I locked away my old Red-Black jersey for a blue one. Then the bastards went and sent Hakan away. After Hakan gave an interview with the Turkish media of his bad times at Inter, I hated Inter and Materazzi more than any other team.

Similar kinda thing for Tugay Kerimoglu. I became a Blackburn fan after he joined them, where he's still playing and scoring. True legend.
  • Ezequiel Lavezzi n Bobo Vieri. And, also, Colin, for his comment on Hargreaves.
  • Not exactly what I would call a fan crush, but if Michael Essien didn't play for Chelsea, I would be a huge fan of his. As it is, I greatly respect his play and like to watch him play for Chelsea (when he's healthy of course).
  • Jen
xabi alonso. i wake up early on the weekends to watch liverpool play. because of him, i'm utterly obsessed with the team. the reason i religiously followed spain during the euros and was only a little bit sad that germany lost to them (my home team).

christoph metzelder... it's hard to watch german national games without him in the back 4. sigh, i miss metze.
  • MoMONEY
Iniesta, Ribery, Kaka, Torres, Pato, and most of all Zizou
  • Carmen Sandiego
I have a massive fan crush, perhaps bordering on a real crush, on Dimitar Berbatov. I used to have a soft spot for Spurs just because of him. When he moved to United it was almost too good to be true (being a United supporter).

I just think his style of play, his reading of the game, and his touch are all beautiful. Elegant, poetic, balletic. That little dance around the defender during the Man Utd - West Ham match... He's just not like other footballers. There's an aura of mystery about him.
  • Ebrahim
Michael Owen! Followed him since he burst on to my favourite team Liverpool's scene. Was sad that he left, but couldnt help but follow his progress EVERYWHERE! I love it when he scores....

Dennis Bergkamp - always and forever! I hated it when Wenger used to sub him after 65 mins in his last couple of seasons there...

Before the two of these, it was John Barnes. Nuff said.
  • Kelly
Most of my fan crushes are Azzurri (or ex) players, namely Cannavaro, Nesta, del Piero, and Totti.

I also watch Barcelona more often now for Henry, and watch Villareal for Pires and the hope Jozy gets on.
  • none of my fan crushes are from Lyon****

    oopsies
  • My team is Lyon but none of my fan crushes are from other teams.

Every time Theo Walcott is playing I'm on the edge of my seat.

Cesc Fabregas is the only reason I liked Arsenal before Theo played.

Fernando Torres is just a player I have to respect, and when he's not starting on Liverpool, I don't watch the matches.

Ibrahimovic, Nuno Gomes, and Sergio Ramos round out the other players which I can never hate because I have forever loved them.

Did I forget to mention Ryan Babel?
  • Nothing wrong with a fan-crush on Jens, Laurie. I've always been upfront about mine. :D

Speaking of German goalkeeper fan-crushes, my current one is Manuel Neuer of Schalke. Although that may have elements of an actual crush. I don't care what happens to Schalke, most of the time, as long as no one scores on Manu. I'm a sucker for players that are on their hometown team.
  • Finnegan
I could actually stand manchester united when they had ruud van nistelrooy. sir alex lost all my respect when he sold him to real madrid.
  • Sam
I'm a big fan of Maniche, Ribéry and more and more of late, Vedran Corluka.
  • Colin
    Owen Hargreaves.

I am flat out in love with the dude (in a fan-crush way). He dresses a great game, plays hard in any position and has got more passion for his team than anyone else on the pitch.
  • Louise
Fabio Cannavaro. God knows I would have never followed Real Madrid if he had not gone there (let alone cared about what happened in La Liga).

If only he could just play for the Azzurri, life would be easier...
  • Rob
Luka Modric. I used to really dislike Spurs, but I didn't enjoy their bad run at the start of the season because they have the little genius in the middle.

Maldini - I'll still watch a Milan game purely to watch him play.

Phillipe Mexes and Francesco Totti - Main reason I have a soft spot for the current Roma side.

Classic Player-wise Johan Cruyff - The amounts of hours I have lost to Youtube due to Cruyff is silly.

Eric Cantona - As a child he was everything. I still will buy a magazine if he's on the cover.
  • Mustafa
I am a colossal tottenham fan... but I have a man-crush on fernando torres soooo hard... seriously, watching him play gives me a bro-ner

I play fifa and i use liverpool when i play against other teams, just so that i can score 14 goals a game with him, and sing the song that liverpool fans sing for him after every goal

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v...
  • Laurie, looking at the criteria you have...my own story does not fit into any of those. Anyhow, my case is just like what you said about Mad Jens.

I had never tell anyone about this fan-crush I had actually. The fan-crush I ever had on a footballer as yet. Anyhow, I don't know when I start to have a fan-crush on Michael Owen. Yes, that Owen who has not been featuring for Fabio Capello's England squad unless he is 100% fit (which I can understand from Capello's point of view). I think it all started when I was 10 or 11 (that will be like a decade or so ago) when I was just flipping through the pay-TV magazine and there was a write-up on Owen. And there was a photo of it together in the article. Me starting to get dreamy then, but knowing much later he had already gotten married (and that was when I came crashing down to Earth). Anyhow back then, I always get excited if his name is mentioned anywhere. The late 90s when Owen exploded into the scene (think of the 1998 World Cup).

I used to remember I went disappointed when I found out that he went to Real Madrid. Back then I was like thinking 'Why?'. Well, he only spent a season there and when he returned to England and to Newcastle, I was so happy. Funny given I am actually a Manchester United supporter. And whenever I read that he scored a goal (or goals, though that is rare now) for Newcastle, I am just simply happy. If he scores against the club I support, I will not be complaining! :)

As I only started to support England since the 2002 World Cup (don't ask), it was only much later when I read about England's qualification journey, I went happy that it was Owen who scored the hat-trick against the Germans in that eventual famous/infamous (depending which side you are on, England or Germany) 5-1 scoreline in Munich. When I once looked at the video highlights of that match, I was like thinking 'He is so young then!'.

Owen may or may not feature for England in the near future but still even now, I always get excited whenever I read any article about him. *sigh*

You made me do it, Laurie. :P Making me confess something I thought I will bring it to my grave when I eventually die.
  • Bonnie
Xavi on Barcelona. Every game I watch, I wish it was somehow possible that Xavi wins but Barca loses horribly.
  • Al
Sergio Ramos. No, I don't have a secret allegiance to Real Madrid but everything about him is so intriguing. On the pitch he's so versatile and fun to watch, and I only root for him in Spain matches. If he scored a cracker against my Atletico I would just silently applaud and hope he doesn't score again. If my girlfriend did Sergio Ramos behind my back I wouldn't even get mad.

Honorable mention is Rafael Marquez. Hated by US fans, torn apart by tabloids in Mexico, talisman in the Barca defense, he deserves so much respect for being a solid player and for doing whatever the F he wants outside the pitch.
  • Batistuta. My girl knows all about it and she even understands....the aesthetic part at least.
  • Gonzalo Higuain, without a doubt, which is kinda weird considering he's only a year older than me. But he's an awesome player, me and my mates all agree that within a few years he'll be the best player in the world. Also, he has outstanding hair..

My bro used to have a man-crush on Gabriel Heinze when he was with United.
  • OhYes
I like Angel Di Maria and David Villa. My crush on Angel began when I saw him play in the olympics and I only watch Benfica games because of him. In fact, I would not care about that league if it wasn't for him.

It's a little different with David Villa. I care about the league he plays in, and I wouldn't have much of a problem watching Valencia games if he wasn't there, but his presence in the team makes the game more enjoyable to me.
  • Hmmm, Most of my crushes are on the team I follow: when Brazil came to town I seriously considered going to the hotel in search of Julio Cesar and I actually read Macro Materazzi's book.

For non-Inter players: I recently sat through a whole (shudder) epl game just to watch Cesc Fabregas (he is dreamy).
  • This one may not apply using your standards, but it's a pretty serious mancrush: Yaya Toure. Over on the Barça Offside he's got a pretty good following. I even made a rating: the Yaya Fear Rate (YFR). It is calculated between 0-100%.

    0% is you are Yaya.
100% is you have just been Yaya-ed. Ask any of FC Basel's players what that means. Or Diego Capel.
I am typically at 15% because Yaya is 5,000 miles away, but he might be looking in my direction.
  • Manucho. Manucho. Manucho. My girlfriend would be a little confused/terrified were she to fully understand the man-crush I have on the big Angolan.
