Offside Soundoff: Which Player Broke Your Heart?
By: Daryl | February 6th, 2009
Kaka’s proposed £100m (or whatever it was) move to Man City got a lot of people quite excited. Including us. But deep down we all knew it was never going to happen.
All except Christopher Atkins that is. This City fan was a true believer. So much so that he went and got “Kaka” tattooed on his chest. For reals.
We can’t show you the image, because The Sun newspaper isn’t particularly generous when it comes to that sort of thing. So you’ll have to click on over there to take a look at Atkins regrettable bit of bodyart.
Atkins will probably be more embarrassed than heartbroken. Because – assuming they don’t get relegated – City will eventually sign some other big name superstar, and then Atkins can tattoo that player’s name on his body instead.
But that’s not the case for players your team has loved and lost. Remember Newcastle fan Robert Nesbit, who got a tattoo of Andy Cole – in full Toon Army kit – on his leg? Only for Cole to join Man Utd two days later? Now that’s heartbreak.
So I was wondering, which players have broken your heart by either leaving or nearly-but-not-quite- joining your club?

Aaron Ramsey. As a Man Utd supporter, I remembered he was close to signing for us. Before Arsenal got him under our noses. I did not throw a fit though, funny enough!
Michael Owen is another. Though this was when I was much younger. When I found out he went from Liverpool to Real Madrid, I was like – ‘Why?’. Maybe because I have a sort-of crush on Owen (don’t ask me why), I was just not happy he went to Spain. Well, look what happened after his only season at Real.

Watching Maradona score on Greece in the World Cup 94, and seeing his celebration in front of the camera. When I saw those eyes, at the age of 14, I knew he was coked out of his mind or something. And considering I idolized the guy, finding that my suspisions were true was terrible. Big time let down.

When Mario Jardel left Galatasaray right after joining us for 28 million dollars and scoring 40 goals in that season. Found out later he went from the training grounds straight to a friend who supplied him with all the Coke he could handle…

Miroslav Klose. Both that he went to Bayern, and the way he went. He was one of my very favorite players and I still can’t quite forgive him. Nothing really matches it.
