Old Firm should be a bit firmer next season

Celtic capitualted 2-0 away at Rangers in today’s Old Firm clash, with Kris Boyd scoring a nicely placed volley and Charlie Adam a decent free-kick. The SPL title was already in Celtic’s green and white hooped bag, and the fans still celebrated accordingly after the final whistle. But Wee Gordon Strachan must be worried by his team’s lacklustre performance, best summed up by Celtic Quick News thus:

“I can offer no analysis of the Rangers defence, who were not tested, or of Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink, who could not even complain about Celtic’s final ball being poor, as their penultimate ball invariably signalled the end of a move.”

So not good then. But good for the neutral to see Rangers matching Celtic again, something they haven’t managed in this season’s title “race” and were even beaten to second place last season by crazy Vladimir Romanov’s Hearts. Walter Smith took over at Ibrox in January 2007, with the championship already as good as decided. Hopefully he’ll have things sorted at Ibrox for next season, and Gordon Strachan will get things back on track at Parkhead. Then we can all enjoy a good old-fashioned two-horse Scottish title race with a photo finish, just like your granny used to.
