One Small Step for Man, One Giant Leap for Watford
By: Bob | April 12th, 2007
If it weren’t for the sports world we would have to rely on politicians to provide our daily dose of hyperbole and clichés. Fortunately men get paid to kick around a ball and journalists get paid to ask the inane questions that lead to the inane answers that leave us all a little more enlightened.
Today’s lesson is in history and it comes courtesy of Watford manager Aidy Boothroyd. His club is languishing in the bottom of the English Premier League but has somehow managed to advance to the semi-finals of the FA Cup where they will play Manchester United this weekend.
That is the same Manchester United that is on top of the league and on top of the world after their Champions League dismantling of Roma. None of that matters to Boothroyd, however. He thinks his team is ready to take its rightful place in the history books.
“This would be a major shock and up there with man landing on the moon. But a man has done that and anything is possible.
“We know the gulf is huge between us and the chances are very slim, but there is a chance for us,” Boothroyd told reporters at the pre-match news conference.
Decades from now I am sure we will all look back and agree that Watford beating Manchester United in the 2007 FA Cup semi-finals ranks right up their with the Magna Carta, the eradication of polio and man walking on the moon. That is almost as believable as the notion that Manchester United fans will cut down on their drinking because UEFA told them to. Good luck with that.

Watford are in the semi because the Cup is a knockout competition and anything can happen over 90 mins. It’s why the Cups are so good.
