Oscar de la Hoya to Buy Houston Dynamo?
By: Laurie | November 28th, 2007
Poor Houston Dynamo. You have to feel a little sorry for them. They win back-to-back MLS cups, but daddy Phil Anschutz barely notices. He has eyes only for the drama and glamour provided by their underachiever sibling, the LA Galaxy.
Anschutz, you’ll remember, is the billionaire owner of AEG, the company which once owned several MLS franchises. With this year’s sale of the Chicago Fire, that number is now down to two — the Galaxy and the Dynamo.
But now that the league is all grown up at 12+ years old, MLS is applying pressure to owners, asking that they own only one franchise apiece. So AEG is having to choose between Houston and LA.
Sophie’s Choice: One child must be sacrificed. Dynamo, you lose.
So where does that leave the MLS champion Dynamo? Perhaps with boxer Oscar De La Hoya and his Golden Boy Productions?
KHOU in Houston is reporting that:
11 Sports has learned since the Galaxy is headquared in LA and has signed British soccer star David Beckham, the Los Angeles based company, AEG, is looking to divest itself of the Dynamo. …
Boxer Oscar De La Hoya is interested in buying the Dynamo with his company Golden Boy Productions. Representatives of the company have visited Houston, attended games and are very impressed with the way the franchise is operated along with how the team has played.
Hat tip to The MLS Zone, which also reports that, “At 34 years old, the Golden Boy has totaled revenues of $612 million over his 18 career pay-per-view bouts.”
$612 MILLION?!? Dude. We’re in the wrong business.
