Paris Saint Germain Finally Wins at Home

psg-lens.jpgFor the first time all season, Paris Saint Germain’s notoriously rebellious crowds had a reason to not riot after a home game. Because, believe it or not, for the first time this season, PSG actually won. Yes, at home. Yes, I’m serious.

Watching PSG home games this year has been a lot like watching a shipwreck movie. You’re not quite sure what’s going to sink the ship, but you know it’s going down. The only question is how.

Will they get torpedoed early and sink immediately? Or will they take on water slowly, holding out for so long you think there might be survivors, only to have everybody drown before the rescue boats can arrive?

Regardless, of how it’s done, the result has been the same. They lose. Or, at best, they don’t win. And as we’ve said before, the fans have not been happy.

Today’s game between PSG and fellow bottom-dwellers Lens started out as expected. The first half was so boring that several of my body parts fell asleep. Lots and lots of fumbles and stumbles and “If I blast it down the field, maybe somebody will get there” passes. It looked like PSG would be doing well to pull off a nil-nil draw.

And then, near the hour mark, came the first truly magical ten minutes of their home season. First one goal by Pauleta, then two more by Diané. Final score PSG 3-0 Lens.

“It’s great because we have really been waiting for that and now we can savour it more than usual,” said PSG coach Paul Le Guen.

“This victory allows us to breathe and I hope that it gives the players more confidence at the Parc (des Princes).”

More confidence? It’s possible. The entire team’s confidence seemed to go way up after the first goal, and if they’d broken a spell. And given the congestion at the bottom of the Ligue 1 table, the win catapulted them from 17th place to 11th. Well out of the relegation zone. For the moment.

If you’re a PSG fan, be sure to watch this video over and over as we hope it’s a sign of things to come.
