Pay as you Go Tickets

Life isn’t easy for non-league teams, competing for attention with the big boys. Consider Cammel Laird in England’s Unibond League Division One. On most Saturday’s locals have to choose between Cammel Laird’s non-league action and the likes of Liverpool, Everton and Tranmere Rovers. Most would rather see Fernando Torres or Andrew Johnson play before Laird’s Ronnie Morgan (pictured.) So the little team needed to do something a bit different. And so they did.
To celebrate their centenary season (no mean feat) Cammel Laird have introduced the Take Your Pick ticket. Basically you pre-pay for game credits (£25 for 5 or £45 for 10) and then use a game credit to see any game you feel like. The hope is that it will encourage fans to come and see Cammel Laird when the bigger clubs are away or not playing. To that end there’s a 10% discount on game credits for anyone who produces a Liverpool, Everton or Tranmere Rovers season ticket.
Seems like this is exactly the opposite of how certain MLS teams are going to force-feed fans ticket packages built around the one game against European opposition/Beckham’s Galaxy that they actually want to see. But it’s an idea MLS could use. For example why not make the tickets you’re forced to buy flexible a la Cammel Laird, so fans can use them anytime they want?

The Minnesota Thunder (USL-1) do this with many of their season ticket packages. You buy, say, 17 tickets (if there are 17 games in a season), but you can use them in any way you see fit - take ten friends to one game and go by yourself to six other matches, etc. It works great in that a) it commits you to buying 17 tickets even if you’re not willing to commit to going 17 times, and b) you usually end up taking friends with at some point during the season, friends who are more likely to buy tickets in the future.

That type of idea isn’t that far fetched. The Milwaukee Brewers baseball club works that as well. We have friends that trade tickets to load up on certain games to bring me and you can trade unused tixs for future dates. Flexibility is cool!
