Peace Soccer Match ends up not so Peaceful
By: Bob | July 5th, 2007
It is an all too predictable outcome. A bunch of do-gooders come together to show off the beauty and joy of football in an exhibition match that promotes peace and harmony among fans. What could possible go wrong?
Ananova has the story.
A football match organised to promote non violence among fans in Germany ended in a mass punch-up.
Five fans were arrested at the game which was staged in Aachen as part of a police campaign against hooliganism.
The violence started when five young players attacked a heckler who was kicked and punched to the ground, and then other players and fans waded in.
A police spokesman said: “We had thought this game would show local kids that sport was a meaningful way of spending their spare time.”
An anti-hooligan match that turns violent. A match of religious tolerance that isn’t tolerant. In the future organizers should try promoting opposite events. If you want peace, hold an all-out hooligan brawl match. If peace breaks out, great. If the hooligans eliminate one another from the gene pool, great.

I expect nothing less from the Huns.

maybe we should just admit it - competitive sports are no good - they’re inherently violent, and when that violence spirals out of control to punch-ups and murder, we act surprised - but should we?

Sorry to spoil the fun a little bit. But it’s probably worth reading what actually happened:

When it comes to violence and stuff like that I’m a bit picky.
