Perhaps Fans Should be required to Carry Paper Currency

By: Bob | November 13th, 2006

I’ve never been in a position where people have tossed money my way, either figuratively or literally. After watching the recent trend of fans tossing coins at players, coaches and referees in England, I’m pleased with my decision not to dress as a wishing well for Halloween. Those coins can do some serious damage, as we saw this past weekend in a FA Cup match between Newport and Swansea. In the video below, you’ll see what happens when a referee is on the losing side of a coin toss. The official, Alan Sheffield, collapsed unconscious with a burst blood vessel and was taken to a hospital where he had surgery to repair a split artery. The idiotic fan who threw the coin could end up costing Newport the £50,000 it earned from their FA Cup run. That’s a lot of coin for a small club.

What an arm that thrower’s got. There’s a running track between the stand and the pitch and he still got it bang on with great velocity.
