Peruvian Club Can’t Pay Wages, Buy Superstar Anyway.
By: chris | January 7th, 2009
Imagine this: Your company tells that because times are tough they haven’t been able to pay your salary for three months. But because you love your job so much, and are so lucky to take part, you decide to stick it out. Then your company goes and announces they’re going to sign one of the most famous employees in your country’s history. And they’re going to pay him. Oh, and he likes pointing guns on magazine covers.
I suspect your reaction would make most postal workers look sane by comparison.
Peruvian club Universitario, whose players say they are owed nearly three months’ wages, have said they can afford to sign international midfielder Nolberto Solano who is set to join the club this week.
Purely on a topical level, this appears to be stupid, insane and incredibly disrespectful. They say they’ll be able to pay wages shortly, but maybe they’d be smart to get on solid footing for awhile before making any big buys. You know, like waiting a couple days after paying off your over-balance credit card before buying a big screen plasma.
However, if the club are looking for incoming funds, why not bring in Solano to put more asses in the seats, get sponsors interested and generate a general buzz about your team?
And so from this we can cure the economic crisis: go shopping and buy something really flashy.
