Peter Madsen’s Ode to Manchester
By: chris | November 24th, 2008Most of the talk surrounding needless showboating comes from England – Manchester, lookin’ at you – but it does, shockingly, happen elsewhere. Take, for instance, Peter Madsen of Brondby IF. His team was hammering Sonderjyske 5-0 when, in the 88th minute, a ball is sent his way. Some nifty ball control later, he finds himself with a defender in place of the keeper on the goal line. Easy tap in for 6, right? Wrong. He decides to pull out his bag of tricks and go with a rabona for the deep sixer. Madsen being a striker who has, according to ESPN & Wiki, scored four goals since 2005. Hardly someone who should be doing anything but a simple finish, right?
Maybe the guy has no left foot, or maybe he has some personal vendetta against Sonderjyske, but this seems a tad excessive. A simple tap in would’ve sufficed; no need to further embarrass Sonderjyske in front of their own fans – at least those who were loyal/dumb enough to stick around to the final whistle. Or maybe it’s just me.
But perhaps it could be better phrased as a question: If this were Cristiano Ronaldo, would the world be calling for his head? Or are these two entirely different sentiments altogether?
