Pick Your Premiership Big Four
By: chris | July 29th, 2009
“They might not be favourites to win the league but they should be.” – Martin O’Neill on Manchester…
…City.
This hot on the heals of City’s scoop of Kolo Toure from new rivals Arsenal. Now, as respected as Martin may be in the game, that might be taking things a tad far. However, it’s plain as day that without Europe to worry about (pesky bastard that it is), Citeh have a real chance to break up the Big Four hegemony this season. Or are they just another Tottenham – good on paper, mediocre at best everywhere else?
Whether you agree with their buys or not, the inevitably top heavy tactical formation, the man leading the revolution or their shameless attempts to buy a team, one thing is for certain: they’re going about their assault on the Big Four the absolute right way – by weakening their closest rival.
Even Arsenal fans will probably admit they’re the #4 in the Big Four right now – the standings would at least indicate such. And whether or not they were positively giddy to get a smooth €40m for their African duo, they’re still a relatively young team which just lost two veterans which can’t afford to lose experience. And this to a team which can simply hope they pan out, and if not simply write a check in January to bring in someone who will.
As of now, City’s summer of spending has netted…
Gareth Barry
Carlos Tevez
Emmanuel Adebayor
Kolo Toure
Roque Santa Cruz
This after nabbing Wayne Bridge, Nigel de Jong, Shay Given and Craig Bellamy during the winter. And there’s little chance that they’re calling it a summer here – surely there must be another tier two striker to be had.
But does all this put them in the ultra valuable Champions League next summer? Can they gel appropriately? Does Mark Hughes have any idea what he’s getting into with this squad? Will a giant paycheck be enough to sooth the irritation of a firm spot on the pine for many?
But it’s not just City. Martin O’Neill’s own club have continued their progression and could, with two halves like last year’s first, make their way into the CL. And what’s more is that none of the others have really strengthened. It remains to be seen how Man Utd will react to the loss of all that hair gel; Liverpool’s two big moves have been overpaying for Glen Johnson and Andriy Voronin back from loan – hardly anything to write home about; while Chelsea have some nice depth from Zhirkov, but haven’t really brought in the big name game changer – not yet at least; will Arsenal reinvest that money wisely…or reinvest at all?
There’s plenty of time left to go, but we can probably say this year, more than last, the Big Four is up for grabs. Just like we say every year. (Which is precisely why nothing will change.)
So is Martin right? Will Manchester break into the Champions League treasure chest? Or another team which doesn’t rely on money printing machines? Pick your four.
(For giggles: Chelsea, ManU, Liverpool, Arsenal – in that order.)

Well Arsenal could do with a defensive midfielder, and now a centre half, but going forward they look frightening. I genuinely think it could be the most interesting season in ages though, because I have no idea what’s going to happen at the top.

Maybe not in this order but Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea, Man U. Arsenal is resilient team. Don’t ever count us out.

You’re all mad if you think United are dropping out of the Big Four… it’ll stay the same… maybe the order will change a bit, but it will stay the same… Citeh may threaten next season, but there’s just too much flux right now…

the thing that separates city from say a tottenham is that tottenham spent big money on unproven EPL talent (dos santos, modric, gomes, pavylchenko). even bentley was marginally good for blackburn. city have gone out and gotten focal points of top half EPL teams and a severely underrated keeper in Shay Given.
Chelsea wins league, followed by liverpool, man city and man u

if tim howard has a stand out season then everton will be be able to break the top four. city won’t break the top 4 this year but be worried for the season after. if any team from the top 4 drops it will be arsenal unless they spend there money wisely

chelsea, arsenal, liverpool, manU
They’re the big four for a reason and out of the four of them only one made their money the man city way. Every season there is speculation but soon enough we’ll give credit where it is due. Get ready for the status quo.

Chelsea, ManU, Arsenal, Liverpool.
I can see Everton or Villa coming close, but not City yet. Remember, they were 10th last year, barely in the top half. They’ve strikers galore, and will score plenty I’m sure, but they gave up 50 goals last year, and adding Toure won’t cut that in half, which they’d need to do if they really want to challenge for the top 4.

yeah, i gotta say that what separates a great team from the others is that they have a lot of indispensible, priceless players (gerrard, torres, rooney, vidic, ferdinand, cesc, walcott, lampard, terry). the only two you could doubt from that list are cesc (but bc he WANTS to go to barcelona and eventually arsenal will respect that) and terry (but he was never going to leave).
the fact that city bought so many stars from teams that aren’t really in much financial trouble shows that the players that they bought all had a price and weren’t that indispensible. toure had a price, santa cruz had a price, bellamy had a price, hell even tevez had a price (SAF showed that he’s far from indispensible last season). the difference with real madrid is that they threw enough money to make indispensible players dispensible, but that’s not exactly what city did. i can’t really name a player on city that i feel is really indispensible or priceless. and for that reason, i think the big 4 of years past will remain for this year. it might change within a few years or so, but not this year. their team right now is just the leftovers of the big 4.

Chris, you fool! You’ve used the club crests of Premiership clubs in this post! You’ve doomed us all!
As for the big four, I expect: ManU, Chelsea, Arsenal, Manchester City, with Liverpool giving it up to Man City as they go deep in this year’s Champions League. Of course, I don’t follow the EPL, so don’t think too much of this.

If Villa or Everton had made any big moves so far, I might have them taking Arsenal’s spot, but since those moves haven’t happened, I doubt they will.

city doesn’t have a prayer. if anyone were to break the big four i’d have to go with aston villa and then maybe everton.
if city can’t even beat south african teams, how are the supposed to beat wolves or hull, much less top PL teams?Posted from

I’m surprised so few people believe in city. I’m not a City fan by any means, but I think if you look at it they are every bit as talented as Arsenal. Once City buy Lescott, they will be starting something like Givens Bridge-Lescott-Toure-Richards Ireland-Kompany/De Jong-Barry Robinho-Adebayor-Tevez. That’s more talent thant Arsenal can put on the field. Whether or not City can achieve what they should this year is up for debate, but I think talent wise they’ve got it. Depending on whether Liverpool sell Alonso/Mascherano, I think it will be Chelsea, then Liverpool and United in some order (if Liverpool keep Alonso they finish 2nd), then City. Arsenal a somewhat close 5th, followed by Everton and Villa close behind.

Colby, I think some of it has to do with the manager. Most people don’t want to underestimate the experience that SAF, Wenger, and Benitez hold with their teams.

the top 4 wont change … villa or everton may give a scare to the top 4 but it will still be the same — as for Citeh, look at the dressing room : Robinho, Adepaymemore, Bellamy … it is soap opera out there. Also there is the small matter of ANC next year.

Arsenal will fall out of the top four this season. They have not replaced their constant goal threat Adebayor. Van Persie is injury prone and always out for a long period of time in the season. Plus, he doesn’t score as much as Adebayor usually. Niklas Bendter is a joke. Even Arsenal fans consider him a joke. Eduardo is injury prone too after his horrific injury. Vermaelen seems young and inexperienced and I can see him making a few vital mistakes this season. Either ManchesterCity or Tottenham will take their place

IMO, Man U, Chelsea, Liverpool, Arsenal.
City? They’ll need a couple of weeks to get their formation working, and then you’ve got the massive ego problem. Will Robinho sit on the bench so Hughes can play Adebayor, Tevez and Santa Cruz up front? And then there’s still Bellamy and Benjani on the bench… In midfield, SWP, Barry, Ireland and Robinho looks great, but that means only two strikers (or a strange 3-4-3 formation), and neither Robinho nor SWP are known for tracking back… Still, De Jong and Kompany, Etuhu, Johnson and Petrov will be ready to pop in and get a game if they can. Defense? Kolo Toure’s a nice catch, but regardless of if they get another player or not, it’s crowded. Captain Dunne can’t really be left out, nor can Richards, and I don’t know how Ben Haim, Garrido, Bridge, Zabaleta and Onuoha are going to feel fighting to get on the bench. At least they’re not trying to buy someone to put Given on the bench, I think.
Even if Hughes somehow manages to organise them to play as a team, manages the egos and so forth… so many of them play in international sides it’s going to be a joke. Tevez, Santa Cruz, Robinho and Zabaleta going to South America. Adebayor, Kolo Toure, Benjani and Etuhu travelling to Africa.. Will all these players be able to give 100% only days after coming back from countries almost on the other side of the earth, with jet-lag, time difference and whatever temperature or climate was inflicted on them? Lucky for City, Given, SWP, Petrov, Dunne, Ben Haim, Kompany, Barry, Bellamy, De Jong and perhaps Richards, Ireland or Johnson will “only” be travelling in Europe, so they’ll probably not be too tired. Add to that the African Cup of Nations (bye-bye Adebayor, Kolo Toure, Etuhu and Benjani, hope none of you were playing an important role), and I don’t think City’s impressive squad-building will reap rewards as early as this season.
However, in two or three seasons if they manage to keep their “stars” and possibly pull in a few more, then they’ll be a force to reckon with.

Chelsea > Man United > Liverpool > Arsenal. Man City will not make the top 4 because not only does their form need to improve by so much that it’s bordering on the ridiculous, but Arsenal will in fact improve on last season, making the task even harder. Chelsea are stronger than ever, as are Liverpool, while United are a great team without CRon, and Tevez was never very influential.
Thus, something drastic and monumental has to occur for City to make the top 4 this season, whether it is by own merits, due to a dire run of results by the top 4, or a combination of both.
Baby steps I say. Don’t forget it took Chelsea many more millions than City have spent to win the EPL (and a certain Special manager Hughes certainly isn’t even close to).

I think Mancity could have some locker room issues this season. It just seems that alot of the players will be upset with lack of playing time. I don’t know maybe I’ll be wrong.
i think the mid-table battles will be interesting though, as you can’t deny that based on talent alone City will probably be in the top 10. But with the way Villa, Everton, Tottenham, and Fulham played last year it should be good to see who is putting pressure on the last champions league spot.
I say Chelsea, Arsenal, Manu, Liverpool.

Liverpool, Chelsea, Man U in top three, in that order. Arsenal, Everton, AVFC and Man City swap fourth throughout the season, ending with Everton fourth, Man City fifth, Arsenal sixth, AV seventh.
