Playing for Peace

By: Bob | August 4th, 2006

peace team.jpgI have to admit that it is tough reading the newspapers today. The violence, the hatred, the anger….and that is just in the sports section.

That is why it is nice to read about initiatives that use sports to promote a broader understanding. This weekend a group of U16 football players from Israel and Palestine are competing together as a Peace Team in Swiss U16 Cup. They’ll square off against youth teams like Chelsea and VfB Stuttgart.

I can’t pretend to know what it is like to walk in their shoes, but I do respect their courage. Win or lose, they’ve already won.

Perhaps the dove with the olive branch has a couple of gasps of life left.

Thank you for posting this. Please keep us updated, for however long these brave kids rock the house.

Excuse me now, I have to go cry.
