Podcast: 10 Reasons Why You Should Watch Soccer
By: Daryl | October 16th, 2009
Time for a bit of shameless self-promotion. Along with Taylor from Man Utd Offside, I’ve been co-hosting a public radio show titled the Total Football Soccer Show. We’re eleven episodes in, and have been posting each show on Podcast Offside. I wanted to bring the 11th and most recent episode to you attention here on the front page, because it focuses on something a lot of USA based footy fans will be interested in: The popularity (or otherwise) of the beautiful game in America. I’m hoping this will spark a bit of discussion among our US based Offside readers, and provide a window into American soccer culture for others.
In the show, We try to figure out exactly where soccer ranks vs other American sports, and why. We discuss the future of the sport and how it will be affected by the USA’s performance at the 2010 World Cup. We also list the ten best reasons (five each) why you should watch soccer, a list we hope will persuade a few skeptics like Jim Rome (above left, burning).
You can listen to the show by clicking here to open the mp3, visit the Podcast Offside post to listen there, or go all out and subscribe to the show via iTunes.
If you have any “reasons to watch soccer” to add to the list, please leave them in the comments below, or email the show at soccer[at]wrir[dot]org.

My addition to the list: The wonderful complexity of following the game. Try to explain to a non-fan the difference between the Premier League, the FA Cup and the League Cup, or the concept of international breaks. See if you can make them understand how a Spanish fan could, for example, despise Xavi one week, adore him the next, and then go right back to hating him, all depending on whether his jersey is red and blue or just red. Use the word ‘Hexagonal’ around fans of other sports and witness the total lack of comprehension. It’s a dimension that no other sport can claim, and it makes being a soccer fan that much better.
