Poll: Ferguson or Scolari – Who’s the More Successful Manager?
By: Daryl | September 19th, 2008
Two managerial greats meet for only the second time on Sunday when Big Phil and Fergie go head to head in the Premier League. The Chelsea and Man Utd managers have already done plenty of pre-fight build up, from Scolari encouraging Cristiano Ronaldo to join Real Madrid in June to the recent epic that was John Terry’s overturned red card.
It’s been less than friendly so far, but it’s still two world class trophy-laden coaches. So here’s the ultimately pointless but hopefully interesting question: Looking at the two careers so far, who’s the more successful manager?
Below are the selected highlights of their managerial achievements, starting with the Chelsea boss because his team are at home on Sunday:
Big Phil
Domestic league tiles
- Campeonato Brasileiro Série A – 1 (Grêmio 1996)
- Brazilian state championships – 4 (Centro Sportivo Alagoano 1982 & Grêmio 1987, 1995, 1996)
Domestic cups
- Copa do Brasil – 3 (Criciúma 1991, Grêmio 1994, Palmeiras, 1998)
- Kuwait Emir Cup – 1 (Al Qadisiya Kuwait 1989)
Continental cups
- Copa Libertadores – 2 (Grêmio 1995, Palmeiras 1999)
- Copa Mercosur -1 (Palmeiras 1998)
International titles
- World Cup (Brazil, 2002)
Fergie
Domestic league tiles
- Scottish Premier League – 3 (Aberdeen 1980, 1984, 1985
- English Premier Leauge – 10 (Man Utd 1993, 1994, 1996, 1997, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2003, 2007, 2008
Domestic cups
- Scottish FA Cup – 4 (1982, 1983, 1984, 1986)
- English FA Cup – 5 (1990, 1994, 1996, 1999, 2004
Continental cups
- European Cup Winners Cup – 2 (Aberdeen 1983, Man Utd 1991)
- European Champions League -2 (Man Utd 1999, 2008)
So there you have it. Both have won the big continental prize twice and both have raised unfancied teams to unexpected heights (Grêmio and Aberdeen respectively). The big difference is that Fergie has won a boatload more league titles (13 to Scolari’s 5, or 13 to 1 depending on whether you count Brazilian state championships) while Scolari has lifted the World Cup.
I think maybe Fergie being Scottish and Scolari being Brazilian might have something to do with that last one. But it’s the ultimate prize in football and you’ve either won the thing or you haven’t. Plus Scolari has spent the last seven years of his career in international football, where domestic league titles are hard to come by.
In some ways you could argue it’s a statistical dead heat and that we need a tie-breaker of some sort. Luckily, such a thing exists because these men have met once before. On November 30th 1999, the UEFA Champions League winners (Fergie’s Man Utd) and the Copa Libertadores winners (Scolari’s Palmeiras) met in Tokyo to contest the 1999 Intercontinental Cup. Fergie’s team an out 1-0 winners thanks to a Roy Keane goal. On the other hand, it all depends how seriously you take the Intercontinental Cup.
So, who’s it going to be? Vote below:

I’m not saying it’s hard with Man U. Scolari in charge of Brazil had how many matches a year? Now compare that to Ferguson since he’s been in charge.
And Scolari seems like a dick :/

who the hell is voting for Scolari?

Like James said: look at United in the late eighties when he took charge and before then: a shambles. Look at them now. Even four years ago when the treble-era squad aged and fell apart, everyone said he should retire and that United were past it. Two years later and the squad had been overhauled and invigorated and were a referee away from another treble. Scolari is a great manager with a fantastic record, but how many modern managers outlive their squad to build a better one? It’s a personal choice, but I’d, only just, rather have Ferguson than Scolari.

Who the hell is voting for ferguson? SPL victories compared to the World Cup? not to mention ferguson’s champions league “victories” were both total flukes.

Seriously I wish sometimes people would leave their biased #$%%^@!@* and just look at the facts! Scolari is a good manager but he hasn’t done as much as Sir Alex, they can’t be compared.

have to vote for Ferguson, as much as I dislike the man

They’ve both achieved a hell of alot and anyone who thinks either is miles ahead of the other is foolish.

I can’t believe this question was even asked. Alex Ferguson is the greatest manager in football history. Period.

English Premier Leauge – 10 (Man Utd 1993, 1994, 1996, 1997, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2003, 2007, 2008
Need there be more?

Sir alex has accomplished alot but that world cup trophy big phil has, cant be matched….yes it was brasil and yes they had the best team… but people forget they were very close to not even qualifying for the world cup until big phil was hired and got them thru the qualifying phase… plus in the 2002 world cup they werent even favorites that year…

Lets just see wat Scolari does to Chelsea

Scolari won the world cup with a stacked Brazilian team. When he coached Portugal WITH C.Ronaldo, he couldn’t win anything. Plus in international games you don’t have to worry about trying to keep your best players away from opponents. How many of Scolari’s Brazilian team players were considering jumping ship to France, Germany, or Argentina.

Scolari did come very very close to winning Euro 2004 with Portugal.

ferguson has gotten lucky. he can’t pick players worth a sh*t, but guess what, if you have enough tries your bound to come up with something good (cantona, ronaldo). scolari took a brasil team that was in shambles and won the world cup. ferguson doesn’t even have the courage or skill to try and coach a national side. this is not even a question – ferguson is good for a provincial manager but he will never be world class.

world cup trumps all. scolari for sure.

Not a Fergie fan really but it’s madness to say scolari has been more successful.

a man who is able to win Copa do Brasil with Crisciuma doesn’t even need to win the World Cup to prove he is the best. Big Phil, of course!

You people seem to be forgetting…the 2002 world cup was a joke. By the time it got to the quarters it was anyone’s game, even england were being tipped as potential winners. Which of course was a load of rubbish. It could so easily have been a south korea v turkey final though.
Ferguson has made Man Utd what it is today. All you have to do is look at the Man Utd honours. Before 1992/93 the last league title was 66/67. The club had a lot of success in the 60s, and then very little for 20 years until ferguson came along. Now Man Utd is one of the biggest clubs in the world.
