Portsmouth Players’ FA Cup Medals Go Missing
By: Daryl | May 19th, 2008
Bad news for Portsmouth pair Glen Johnson and Jamie Ashdown. After winning the FA Cup on Saturday, they left London for a victory parade down in Portsmouth. But on returning to their Windsor hotel, right back Johnson and reserve keeper Ashdown found their FA Cup winners medals had gone walkabouts.
Johnson and Ashdown had both left their medals at the hotel, Johnson in his washbag and Ashdown inside his jacket pocket. But neither were there when they returned. First of all: in his washbag? Next to his toothpaste? What was Glen Johnson thinking?
Still seems an odd crime. It’s not as if the thief can just put these medals on e-Bay for a quick profit, because then they’ll get caught. And it’s unlikely the thief or thieves can convince anyone they won the medals themselve. The game was on television. It doesn’t really make much sense.
So here’s what I think happened: It was someone from B&Q getting their revenge for the time Glen Johnson stole a toilet seat. Or maybe not.
“If someone has taken these medals they have deprived our players of a lifelong dream,” Portsmouth’s chief exec Peter Storrie said. So here’s hoping that either that someone returns the medals, or that at the very least the FA can come up with two more bits of metal to replace what Johnson and Ashdown have lost.
