Potential Match Fixing In Italy
By: chris | July 5th, 2008
What’s that I smell? Is that…Luciano Moggi?
More questions now surrounding thaegitimacy of two matches in Serie A this season, after a year of refereeing which brought back memories of World Cup 2002 and everything Juventus did for a 3 year period. The incidents involve the actions between one Atalanta player and five Livorno players and the two games they played this season, one in December and one in May.
It’s pretty vague at this point what actually transpired and which team was supposed to do what. One game ended up in a draw and another in an Atalanta 3-2 win, but Livorno was so terrible this year they may have been the pre-determined winners, so no one really knows.
The two players charged so far have been Livorno senior citizen David Balleri and Atalanta defender Gianpaolo Bellini, and the charges say only “seeking” to fix results. So it’s hard to say whether or not anything was actually achieved, but three Livorno players, Emanuele and Antonio Filippini and Alessandro Grandoni, have also been tattled on because they supposedly knew of the meeting but didn’t turn into rats and tell their mommies.
The teams are essentially irrelevant and the matches had no impact in anyone’s fate, so at least this isn’t Calciopoli and the integrity of the finished table can stay as it is. And even if these accusations prove to be true, it’s only between two, perhaps more, players, leaving whole organizations out of the equation. Hey, at least they’re moving in the right direction. (Can you feel the sarcasm dripping off that one?)
Another day…

Lovely, this’ll certainly do wonders to Serie A’s already spectacular reputation with these things…*sigh* Don’t people ever think?

I think we can go ahead and throw out the word ‘potential’ in the headline.
Its Italian football. come on.

…and it gets people like Geoff saying wonderfully insightful comments like that. *sarcasm* Case in point. Ugh, defending yourself as an Italian footy fan is really obnoxious to people who just pull out Calciopoli as some sort of “I’m better than thou” argument.
