Pushing Ballboys and Punching Fans: How to Make Friends the Gustavo Semino Way

By: Daryl | April 2nd, 2008

Can’t say I know much about the Chilean league. But after seeing this video from Monday’s game between La Serena and Huachipato, I know this much: Gustavo Semino is not a friendly man.

The Argentine defender, who plays for Huachipato, was sent off for pushing a ball boy who he felt didn’t return the ball fast enough. Pushing kids is mean enough, but when a fan ran onto the field to let Semino know what he thought, Semino responded by punching the guy in the face. Huachipato lost the game 2-1, and the fan apparently lost a tooth.

  • Wow. Looks like. Possibly for his own protection?
  • Did they lock him in a cage on the field at the end?
  • Can see your point John, he was definitely provoked.

Geez - it's hard to tell for certain from the video... but I think old Gustavo might not be getting a fair shake. To me, it looked like the ball boy actually chased and tried to push Semino (after Semino kicked the ball away), and the player then (understandably) pushed back. For this he got sent off, and though that bit of him chasing down the ball boy afterwards to vent his anger was a bit of silliness - I don't know about you, but if I'm in Chile and an angry fan rushes on to the pitch after me... suddenly punching someone doesn't seem so unreasonable.

Semino's no saint, but it looked more like a bad day than a bad man.
