Q & As with Real Salt Lake Blogger Fitz

By: Laurie | March 6th, 2008

I have a confession to make. I made Fitz fall in love with RSL. He wanted to blog on the Revs and I said, “And by ‘Revs,’ you of course mean ‘Salt Lake,” right? Because Revs are taken and RSL isn’t.”

And he said, “Yes. Of course. That is exactly what I meant.” He is living proof that arranged marriages can work.

Right, Fitz?

Favorite team besides the one you blog on?
The Red Sox! Oh … did you mean soccer? The Revs in MLS, Reading in the EPL.

The player you’d most like to kick a ball around with ?
Heather Mitts. Duh.

Favorite on-the-field formation (4-4-2, 4-3-3, etc.)?
I like the 4-4-2 because you can vary from it. If your outside backs are marking the forwards just fine, send your stopper up as an extra mid. If you have a good target forward, have your attacking center mid run off him, or have a wing mid run off and have one of the center mids defend on the flank. A 4-4-2 can morph into a 4-3-3, or a 3-5-2, which is why I like starting with a 4-4-2.

Cats or dogs?
Plankton.

Favorite non-Offside soccer blog (because obviously we’re your favorite)
Fellow Keene High School graduate Steven Goff’s Soccer Insider at The Washington Post.

Last DVD you watched
“We Own The Night.” I should make it clear that you did not ask for the last DVD I enjoyed.

Who’s going to win the MLS Cup this year?
Gotta back the Revs.

When you were little, what did you want to be when you grew up?
A writer for Sports Illustrated. And now I’m writing a blog for free! I rock!

If you had to keep your eyes locked on one position (e.g. striker, goalkeeper, etc.) for an entire game, which would it be?
Sweeper. I wanna see the decision-making and organizational skills.

Tell us something about yourself that most people don’t know.
I once made fun of a guy in a wheelchair during a football game. But I have a good excuse. He was a dick.

The most games you’ve ever watched in a twenty-four hour period?
Not start to finish, but on Champions League days, when I had ESPN and ESPN Deportes, four.

Morning person or night person?
Night.

Favorite national team outside of your own?
Faroe Islands.

Favorite TV show to watch in reruns?
I’m on a “Scrubs” kick right now.

Favorite current player on any team?
Jason Varitek, catcher, Red Sox. You did say any team.

Favorite comfort food?
Fried chicken smothered in gravy.

“Gruesome Soccer Injuries” video. Would you watch or not?
I’d much rather watch “Italians Pretend To Suffer Gruesome Soccer Injuries.”

Favorite sport or physical activity to participate in?
Based on your wording, I’d have to say sex, wouldn’t I?

Best game you’ve ever seen?
Italy-Germany, World Cup semifinal, 2006. Germans had never lost in Dortmund. I watched in a bar full of fans for both sides. And Grosso, God bless that drama queen, his finish was spectacular. When the game ended, the bar broke out in applause. And rightly so.

Best pet you’ve ever had?
My current Corgi-Terrier mix, Baldy — named after the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, which raises funds for children with cancer.

Favorite goalkeeper ever?
Kasey Keller. Gotta pick the guy who’s been to four World Cups. Campos is a close second.

What else would you like to say about yourself?
Read my fucking blog or Dave Martinez will kill you.

I’m finding a lot of comfort in seeing how many Offside bloggers write about a team they don’t support. Yah, us!
