Qatar team squeaks by with a 21-0 victory
By: Bob | August 28th, 2006
No matter how bad your weekend might have been, chances are it was better than second division Qatari side Meaizer. Playing in Qatar’s Jasmin Cup, Meaizer was dismantled 21-0 by Al Sadd.
For a while there things were kind of close. Al Sadd, needing a big goal differential to advance in the competition, only scored five goals in the first nine minutes of play. Meaizer must have been thinking that if they could only regroup and tighten up the backline a bit they could go into halftime with a chance. Wrong.
Al Sadd scored five more first half goals and then 11 after the break to set a new Arab football record for ass whipping. For all the misery that Meaizer’s keeper must have felt, Al Sadd and Ecuador international Carlos Tenorio was in the proverbial zone, scoring 10 goals in the match. You’d think after number seven he might have been substituted, but a lead is apparently never safe in Qatar.
The margin of victory is not the greatest in history. Australia famously beat American Samoa 31-0 in an international match back in 2001. That is the same American Samoa side that hasn’t won a match in two decades. They should play Meaizer in a friendly. We’d pay to see that.
