Real Betis Coach Wields a Mean Lollipop
By: Bob | March 22nd, 2007
Tensions are beginning to calm down a bit in that Sevilla-Real Betis rivalry. On Tuesday the two teams finished their second leg of the King’s Cup behind closed doors with Sevilla advancing in the competition. Neither coach was hit by a bottle. That is an improvement. There was, however, another object thrown and another incident involving club officials.
Real Betis coach Luis Fernandez is being blamed for being aggressive towards Sevilla general director Jose Maria Cruz. Aggressive with a lollipop, that is.
French tactician and retired Bleus midfielder Luis Fernández has been accused of ‘aggression’ towards José María Cruz, Sevilla FC director general, according to various eyewitnesses on the Sevilla side.
The weapon used? A ‘Chupa-Chup’; the lollipop made emblematic by Johan Cruyff after the Dutch Coach quit smoking at Barça in the mid 1990’s, although the flavour is yet to be confirmed.
The story goes that the Betis Coach went to seek satisfaction from Sevilla delegate Cristóbal Soria, and, after insulting his mother’s choice of profession and the Sevilla man’s own legal birth status, launched a ‘Chupa-Chup’ at Soria, who dodged the flying candy – but it hit Cruz in the head.
As soon as the flavour is confirmed we’ll make sure to bring it to your attention.
In other La Liga news, Deportivo La Coruna forward Sebastian Taborda is being accused of an oldie but goodie – attacking a reporter. Newspaper scribe Armando Palleiro was apparently on the losing end of the attack claiming that he suffered a bruised head and a cut lip. No word yet if any candy was used in the assault.
