Real Madrid will have to spend $107 million on something else
By: Bob | April 13th, 2007
Lock the door and throw away the key. After all the speculation that he would be leaving for the warming climes of Spain and all the denials by his club that he wouldn’t, Cristiano Ronaldo has signed a new five-year deal to remain with Manchester United. This comes a day after Real Madrid reportedly were ready to offer $107 million, the largest transfer fee in football history.
It might not seem like a shocking development that one of the richest clubs in the world would want to prevent one of the best players in the world from going to another rich club. But go ahead and dig deep into your memory and try to recall what some were saying after Ronaldo helped to boot Wayne Rooney and England out of the World Cup this summer. There was some speculation that he would never even play for an English club again. Boy, were we wrong.
With the Ronaldo to Real Madrid rumors officially toast, what will we have left to talk about this summer during the transfer period? There will be speculation about where Jose Mourinho will manage. There will be the eternal link between Owen Hargreaves and Manchester United. Ronaldinho going to play in Italy is an oldie, but goodie. Franck Ribery will be linked to a million teams. And you can bet that you will be hearing Real Madrid’s name quite a bit. A club that was willing to spend $107 million on a single player is a club that will be now willing to go after a bunch of people instead. Either that or they’ll take their money and spend it on something cheaper. Like a small island nation or John Terry’s cars.

Good move by Man Yoo. He will generate more money for the club over the next five years than $107 million.

It’s too bad people hate C. Ronaldo so much… he’s such a fantastic and entertaining player.
