Red Bulls Goalkeeper Scores from the 25 Yardline

By: Laurie | October 19th, 2008

Pay no attention to those yardlines that might make one think this game was being played on an American football field.*

Or you can feel free to pay attention to them, but only to show you the distance the ball has to travel to make it into the goal.

A lucky bounce or two, a bit of comical goalkeeping, and lo and behold! RBNY goalkeeper Danny Cepero has scored his first MLS goal in his first MLS start. (He’s on the field only because of goalkeeper Jeff Conway’s ten-match ban for use of illegal substances.)

For more on the game, check out Red Bulls Offside.

* Technically? Giants Stadium. But the New York Red Bulls are scheduled to get a brand spankin’ new Soccer Specific Stadium in “late 2009.” Where? In New Jersey, of course.

Yeah, that kind of bounce usually won't happen on a grass field, but Paul Robinson scored against Watford in a similar situation last year.
  • It just occurred to me as I was watching this again that the poor goalkeeper was expecting a grass bounce, and instead he got a turf bounce.

    Ouch.
