However, they loved the fact that this Yank knew as much as they did. It was really strange to move back to the states and have no one know anything about the sport. One thing though, my kids are growing up being able to say they remember when their dad took them to soccer games as a kid. I see it as a double edge sword at times. I certainly learned upon discovering The Offside that the good people of America often have as much, if not sometimes more, knowledge than your average Euro football fan. And the time will come if the MLS continues to grow, when kids in America can say the same kind of cute things that British kids can. The league's growing ambitions via expansion is going to dilute the on-field product. The stringent salary cap and 2-a-year youth academy signings just can't sustain the overall talent level of the player pool. Furthurmore, MLS, if it does go ahead with all the rumoured Canadian expansion (they want multiple cities now?) is going to take a huge shit over their original mandate of developing American talent. Shittier teams in Canada overall, competing for any possible (and mediocre) Canadian talent, buoyed by MLS changing foreign player spot rules in their favor, are going to do all the clubs and fans stateside no favors.
