Ricardo Quaresma Wins the Golden Piece of Garbage Award
By: chris | December 8th, 2008
Forget the Balloon D’Or: The Golden Bin/Trash Can – Bidone D’Oro in Eye-talian – is the best award handed out every year in football. It’s kind of like the Razzies compared to the Oscars; one is for glittering performances…the other the complete opposite.
And the 2008 winner is Ricardo Quaresma, making it the third year in a row someone from Inter has won (Adriano having been a two-time defending champ). Man, Portuguese wingers are just cleaning up the awards circuit.
The results:

When there’s an award to be handed out for garbage play, Adriano is never far away. A decent showing in third, but he’ll want to continue boggling the minds of all when Moratti refuses to sell him yet again next summer.
Bobo Vieri is in there by default, having signed for Atalanta amid damn near riots last summer, only to have played four games due to injury, three of them coming off the bench. Starting to look an awful lot like his 2005 title winning season. (Bobo has boxer’s syndrome: refuses to accept that he should’ve hung ‘em up years ago.)
A little unfair on Ronaldo, perhaps, considering he’s, you know, sans knee ligaments at the moment. But as you can clearly see, this is an award dominated by Milan sides, with 5 out of the top 6 from either side of the San Siro, and only one winner has come from outside the city limits (Legrottaglie – Juventus). And Sheva’s dreaming of Stamford Bridge.
Man of the hour is Ricardo Quaresma, whose big money move from Porto led everyone to believe Cristiano Ronaldo Lite was heading to Milan. Not the case, as Quaresma has proven it takes more than mere skills to make a good footballer – especially in the highly tactical Serie A. A gross amount of money for someone severely lacking in the mental aspects of the game. Of course, not that we didn’t see this coming.
