Rico Clark Talk About Blasting That SOB Ruiz The Unfortunate Incident
By: Laurie | February 4th, 2008
I wondered when Houston’s Ricardo Clark would talk about trying to kick Carlos Ruiz over the line in the Houston-Dallas game last year. You remember the above incident, right? It got Clark a nine game suspension and made him miss the playoffs (in which Houston won the Cup), but it also made him one of my favorite MLS players.
Except that since I’m a Galaxy fan and Ruiz is back with LA, I guess I can’t say that anymore. I guess I’m now supposed to say: Rico, how DARE you kick our poor, innocent Carlos?
Did I sound sincere there? No? To be honest, I wasn’t trying all that hard. Ruiz still makes me feel like I need to cough up a hairball. (Sorry, Galaxy fans, but it’s true. I’m working on it.)
But anyhoo. The delightful USMNT blog has a post up where readers can ask questions of Rico Clark. And one asks about The Incident.
scottyb10 said: Ricardo, what exactly happened with the situation with Carlos. Was it a frustration thing or did he say something that pushed you?
Ricardo: “It was frustrating because Carlos is the type of guy that can get under you skin during the game. He had been coming at me all game, and on that particular play I retaliated. I don’t regret standing up for myself, but I do regret the way in which I reacted. I should have reacted in a more professional manner. The worst part is that taking those actions hurts your team. I have learned from it and put it all behind me. I’m anxious to get back on the field for Houston.”
I’ll let that speak for itself.
To round this out, his favorite foods are “Roti and Curry Chicken,” and his favorite team is Arsenal. And he’s made the 22-man roster for US-Mexico.
Do us proud, Rico! (But with a little more impulse control.)

Even if Ruiz wasn’t the little bugger he is, his hair cut is almost a kick-able offense anyways!

You gotta think that every team, international or otherwise, that has seen this will be doing their best to get under Rico’s skin in the same way to get him to react.

Derek, that occurred to me also. It will be Zidane all over again if he doesn’t get it under control. But this seems very out of character for Clark, and I’m thinking and hoping that he realizes that it will take just one more incident to kill his budding international career.

Ruiz at LA will be a good match. They both have questionable moral guidelines, and a win a any cost attitude. Tragically, they are both short on honor.

“I have learned from it and put it all behind me. I’m anxious to get back on the field for Houston.”
It seems like whenever some celebrity, athlete, whatever commits some atrocious act you hear them use the words “mistake” and “put it all behind me.” To Rico’s credit, he did not use “mistake” but he did use the latter. Both of these terms reek of a lack of taking complete responsibility for one’s actions. To me the phrase says “Ya, ya, I did it but don’t want to deal with the repercussions any more so just drop it and stop whining about it already.”
