River Plate: ‘This Number Has Been Disconnected’.
By: chris | October 14th, 2009
Things are not great in Argentina at the moment. The national team is, as you may have heard, riding through tumultuous times at the hand of perhaps the only unfireable man in the country. Fortunately they’re masters of their own destiny this evening, so perhaps that will change.
Domestically it was a tough start to the Apertura, as there was no start to the Apertura. Finances were lacking and the government was forced to intervene, supplementing the federation with big money in return for the television rights. Things have been rather tepid since the, at least by South American standards, but River Plate are the latest to fall under the wrath of their own fans.
One doesn’t need to know a great deal about the history of Argentinean football to know that River Plate should not be in 16th place. They are. This has not sat well with a passionate fan base, and they let the River Plate players know. On their cell phones.
“We know at what time your wife goes shopping” and “we know your family’s movements” were among the threats made, they reported.
Now imagine what the calls would say if Boca were in 1st, not 10th.
So the players did the smart thing and disconnected their mobile service and shut down the press, the perceived culprits in this little personal info leak.
Now if Diego & Friends don’t win tonight, expect the lot of the Argentine football world to do the same and plunge itself into a technological darkness. Would that be such a bad thing? Probably not. That fans can get access to an entire team’s cell phone listing is far more worrisome than anything going on at the stadiums.
Unless Diego does another bellyslide.
