Roeder leaves Newcastle, get ready for Big Sam

Glenn Roeder jumped or pushedThe shock Premiership resignations are coming thick and fast as the season draws to a close, with Glenn Roeder reportedly calling it a day at Newcastle United.

I say reportedly because 1) it’s not 100% definite just yet, but mostly 2) he apparently “resigned” after being called to an emergency meeting by Toon Chairman Fat Freddy Sheppard, suggesting Roeder didn’t so much jump as was pushed by his big bellied boss.

Roeder’s had a rough time since graduating from caretaker manager to a more permanent position, falling victim to the now traditional mid-season Newcastle injury crisis. But 13th in the Prem after Saturday’s 2-0 loss to Blackburn seems to have been deemed not good enough, either by Roeder himself, or more likely the man who signs his paychecks.

If anyone can bring some success to St. James’ Park, they’ll be treated like a messiah in Newcastle. Even a Carling Cup would do at this point. Hot favourite to drink from the poisoned chalice will be Big Sam Allardyce, whose recent resignation from Bolton may or may not have something to do with today’s news. If anyone can organize Newcastle’s ramshackle defence and finally add some solidity, it’s Big Sam, though the Toon Army might have to trade in their favoured beautiful football for long balls to Kevin Davies.
