Rollersoccer: Soccer on Inline Skates
By: Bob | May 4th, 2007
In our continuing quest to document all of the odd games that have been derived from football, we turn our attention today to Rollersoccer. The sport traces its origins all the way back to 1996 where a few skating fools in San Francisco decided it would be fun to play soccer while wearing inline skates. Today the game is played in no less than 18 countries, from India to Moldova.
The rules of Rollersoccer are fairly straightforward and are similar to the sport from which it derives. Played on a surface the size of a hockey rink, two teams of five play a pair of 25-minute halves. There are unlimited substitutions. The goals measure 1m x 3m and there is a goal crease in front of the goal where only one defensive player is allowed at a time. Perhaps the best rule is the two-point goal. Two points are earned only when the ball passes between the legs of a defender on its path into the goal. If only traditional soccer gave out a reward for a nutmeg!
In 2006, the International Rollersoccer Federation held a world championship featuring ten teams. It was the high rollers from France who came out on top, claiming the top two spots while Germany finished in third and the United States was fourth.
Here’s a look at the sport in action.

Whoa. Cool. Things like this make me feel all twelve again. And I’m sure I would feel that way right up until the time I strapped on the skates and stepped onto the playing surface.

What’s gonna be the next novelty soccer game? You-can-only-use-your-heels soccer? that’d be a kick. Ha-ha, no pun intended.
