Romario tries his luck at coaching
By: Bob | October 23rd, 2007
There are certain players who were born to lead, or so the cliché goes. When you watched Roy Keane play you knew that some day he would be a manager at a high level. The same cannot be said of Romario. The man who claims to have scored 1,000 goals over the course of his career never appeared to be much of a leader. He was a talented player for sure, but someone who could motivate eleven men to play as a team? Someone who could overcome selfishness to lead? Someone who would be willing to forgo parties to do his job? Not so much.
Lead is what he will try to do when Vasco de Gama take on Club America Wednesday in the Copa Sudamerica. Romario has been named the interim coach for Vasco and by interim they mean one game.
Club president Eurico Miranda said: “He (Romario) will lead the team for this match (against Mexican club America in the Copa Sudamericana on Wednesday), but I would like to say very clearly that, whatever the result, we will be looking for a new coach on Thursday.”
The 41-year-old striker is still listed as a player for Vasco even though he hasn’t played in months because of injury. It is easy to imagine him tearing off his suit on the sidelines, entering the game as a substitute and then standing in front of the goal doing nothing other try to pad his goals total while yelling at his coach, himself, to get him the ball.
Certainly we’ve seen other great players try to make the switch to manager and fail before, but what makes this experiment so intriguing, as temporary as it may be, is that it involves a player who was himself beyond coaching.

As a parent of four, my parents respond to my whinging with sarcastic eye rolls. “You’re one to talk!”, they muse, then quote the timeless karmic adage- whatever evil you begot as a kid will be revisted by 100 when you are a parent.
For myself, I can add, “Times Four!”
Now make the jump to Romario’s current situation. How will he ready his team for his one game trial by fire? Hanging out on the Rio beaches? Sampling the nightlife?
One thing we know by his track record, training for the upcoming game will be laughable.
Good luck, Romario! Karmic payback is hell!
