Ronaldinho, Pele and Maradona in the Movies
By: Bob | March 28th, 2007
There have been a number of movies made about football over the years with the vast majority being about as entertaining as Ishtar. The major movie companies may be adding to the cannon of football movies with two potential films in development and one already in the theaters.
The rumor mill is churning out talk that Ronaldinho is talking with Warner Brothers and Disney about doing an animated feature length film. Picture Michael Jordan and the movie Space Jam (I’m sure it is part of your DVD collection) and you get the idea what they probably have in mind. They wouldn’t even have to draw Ronnie. Barca Toons has that covered.
The King is also looking to keep his name alive in ways other than through massive books. Pele is shopping around the idea of a biopic feature film that hopefully will include dramatic reenactments of him killing Romario after he scores his 1000th goal this weekend. You will recall that Pele had a role in Escape to Victory, one of the few football films that I have watched multiple times.
Has Pele caught the movie bug now that “Maradona, the Hand of God” has hit Italian cinemas?
The movie, which coincides with a documentary on Maradona by the Emir Kusturica, concentrates on Maradona off the pitch.
It recounts his slum childhood, his doting mother Tota and long-suffering wife Claudia, and his stormy friendship with his manager Guillermo Coppola, whom many Argentines blame for his addiction and financial problems.”
A cartoon about a football player, a biopic of a man that we already know and a soap opera about a fallen hero. That seems about par for the football film course. Just like Ishtar, I’ll see all three of them, of course.
