Ronaldo + Kaka + Romario + Van Basten + Henry = Pato

By: Martha | December 4th, 2007

Disco, disco Duck. That, at least, is the state of things according to an article in Italy’s La Gazzetta dello Sport, which brings together the various compliments of the Big Names who have seen Milan’s Alexandre Pato play, and have ever since been falling all over themselves to put insane amounts of pressure on him praise him to the skies. No pressure, kid, you’re just the amalgamation of five (or so) of the greatest footballers ever to play the game. Oh, we know, you’re just 18 and have yet to kick a ball in anger for Milan — but you can take it, right? Your own coach declaring you better then Ronaldinho? No problem!

Just to break it down a bit for your checklist of superstars: Pato is said to have the pace and “sense of the goal” of a young (Read: Not fat.) Ronaldo, the education and “good character” of Kaka, the flat-out speed of Thierry Henry, the personality of Romario, and the on-pitch elegance of Milan legend Marco Van Basten. Gee, is that all?

The kid is on the Brazilian Olympic team, which plays for the first time this coming Sunday, and will be eligible to make his official debut for Milan after the transfer window opens on January 3. Get that popcorn ready.

It’s going to suck if this kid turns out to be a flop because they are propping him soooo hard. You would think that they spent 500 million dollars on him and want to make sure the world knows they didn’t buy an expensive dud.

I just keep thinking about his head, Ashley — he’s going to have to be an awfully well-adjusted 18-year-old to not let either the pressure or the praise get to him.

The personality of Romario? (not that Romario isn’t a great, great player, but…) Er, is that supposed to be a good thing? :D

I can’t remember a time when a player was hyped up as big as Pato. I only hope for his sake (and the millions of football fans who want to see something special) that he doesn’t turn out to be average.
