Ronaldo Not Taking Any More Money From Fergie
By: Daryl | July 28th, 2007
Cristiano Ronaldo knows to quit while he’s ahead, especially when winning means taking money from Alex Ferguson. The winger won two consecutive £400 wagers with his boss by meeting goal targets of 15* in 2005/6 and then 20 in 2006/7, both of which are outrageous totals for a winger. But Ronaldo balked when Fergie upped the target to 35 for the coming campaign.
“I won’t be having a bet with Ronaldo this season because he has refused my offer,” laughed Ferguson. “I told him that I would be asking for 35 goals from him this year, but he said no, so there will be no betting this season.”
Seems there’s no way a man like Fergie was prepared to lose three wagers in a row. If he’d set a reasonable target like 25, there’s half a chance Ronaldo could have made it.
But obviously it’s all in good humour, and £400 is nothing money to this pair. The bets always reminded me of the two old men in “Trading Places” where they ruin Dan Aykroyd’s life over a $1 wager. Only instead of Dan Aykroyd it was Premiership defenders who suffered.
*seems he didn’t make this target, and scored only 12 goals in 2005/6

What about that bet… loser would shave his head? That would be far more entertaining. Too bad the media (probably) made that up.

He’ll come close to 35. Maybe not this season, but he’ll do it eventually. Mourinho must be sweatin’ bullets. Man U has some of the freshest and most talented legs at their disposal. Nani, Ronaldo, Rooney and perhaps Tevez, are going to light up Europe this year. Famous last words, I know. Football is fickle, but right now, Fergie has to be feeling pretty good.

Ronaldo scored only 12 goals in the 2005/6 season, he did not beat the 15 goals target.
