Rooney Caught Having a Fag on His Honeymoon

You may have noticed the almost total lack of attention we’ve paid to Wayne Rooney’s marriage. Basically, we’ve been focused on Euro 2008 and he, well, hasn’t. But a surprising bit of news caught our attention today: Wayne Rooney has been smoking on his honeymoon.

And now that there’s photo evidence, it’s not like Rooney can just suck on a peppermint and head back to Man Utd with a whistle. There’s very possibly a teacup with Rooney’s name on it sitting in Alex Ferguson’s office right now.

But, serious question: does it really matter? Plenty of footballers have smoked and gotten away with it, including the mighty Zinedine Zidane.

Obviously smoking doesn’t do much for your fitness, but you could argue that’s what the off-season’s all about.

So assuming Rooney doesn’t smoke heavily from August to May (or every other June, assuming England ever make it to an international tournament again) then there’s no harm in him enjoying a crafty holiday toke by the pool on his honeymoon, is there?

Let’s hope for Rooney’s sake that Fergie agrees.

I once met Klaus "Auge" Augenthaler at the Oktoberfest. Of course he didn't know me, but since I was pretty drunk (can't remember if he also was) I was bending his ears and he smoked all the time, he nearly lit his cigarette with the one before...
Later I read he smoked 2 packages a day and actually had a "license to smoke" from his trainer/club.

Vlade Divac smoked a pack a day and he was... well he was a big slow bastard.

Johan Cruyff was a smoker as player. Then he gave it up as a manager after having problems with the old ticker.

Seems odd, pro athletes smoking though. I mean Gazza was cruicifed in this country for having a kebab - I'd wager the health risks of the cancer stick are significantly more.
