Rudy Fernández to Unleash “The Djalminha” at 2009 NBA Slam Dunk Contest
By: Daryl | February 6th, 2009
Next weekend is the 2009 NBA All-Star Game, featuring the ever-popular Slam Dunk Contest. “Why are you telling me this?” I hear you ask. “Isn’t this supposed to be a football blog?” Don’t worry, I’m getting there.
Portland Trailblazers’ Slam-Dunk entrant is Spanish shooting guard Rudy Fernández. And one of the moves Fernández has lined up for the contest was apparently inspired by Djalminha, the Brazilliant midfielder who spent seven years showboating at RC Deportivo de La Coruña in the ’90s and early ’00s. Fernández basically does a rainbow/sombrero (one of Djalminha’s signature moves) followed by a dunk.
Video of Fernández’ dunk after the jump:
Not too shabby, eh? Can’t say I usually watch the NBA All Star game, but might keep an eye on the Slam Dunk contest now I have something soccer related to support.
And Deportivo are supporting Fernández too, with club chairman Augusto César Lendoiro sending the b-baller a La Coruna shirt. Not sure about Slam Dunk rules. Is he allowed to wear the shirt while dunking? Because that would be sweet.
If you’re not familiar with Djalminha, here’s a vid of the man in action for Depor, back in the day:

Darryl – the answer is yes. Players in the dunk contest can literally do almost ANYTHING they want. Dwight Howard of the Orlando Magic wore a Superman Costume (cape) when he dunked last year:

I told my NBA fan friends that I wanted Rudy in the contest because he would get creative and do something cool… If he does this off the glass to himself it will be EPIC

That’ll be intense, but Dwight will surely have something in the bag as well. This could prove an epic contest of MJ-’Nique proportions.
