When it comes to street football featuring homeless players, the former Soviet Union is king of the mountain. Russia defeated a spirited side from Kazakhstan 1-0 in the final match of the Homeless World Cup this past weekend in Cape Town South Africa. Comrade Lenin is smiling in his above ground tomb today. The victor’s reward is a concrete trophy that could possibly be the heaviest looking trophy in the world and likely won’t be stolen off the streets of Moscow. Homeless players from 48 countries competed in the 4th annual tournament. Austria won the inaugural tournament and Italy captured the prize the past two years.
