Russian League Commences Today
By: chris | March 14th, 2008
‘Tis the start of a new season in Russia today, with a historic game being played in a place you wouldn’t expect. Terek Grozny took on Samara Kryliya Sovetov in a massive game today, where the result mattered little (Terek lost 3-0). Grozny, as some of you may know, is the capital of Chechnya, a republic which was ravaged by war in recent years. And the city which housed the Battles of Grozny, was so devastated it was called the most destroyed city in the world by the UN in 2003. Today they played a football game there. In the grand scheme meaningless, but for the people who lived through the warm it means more - much more:
It’s a great event for the republic and for our people. For me, this is part of history. I’ll tell my grandchildren I was at this match,” said Viskhan Abubokarov, a 20-year-old student of Chechnya State University.“It shows that peaceful life has returned here. The war is over,” he said.
Sometimes sport transcends mediums and makes an otherwise mundane occasion so special.
Looking for bloggers
The RPL is a rising league with many great squads, great players and, like above, great stories making their way into the big lights of European football, and we’re looking for bloggers - for the Russian League blog already up or any team blogs. If you’re interested then send an email to daryl[at]theoffside.com and let him know which team you’d like to blog about and why you’d be great.
More so, the Russian National Team is still looking for a new blogger at the brand spankin’ new euro2008.worldcupblog.org. If you’re interested there, email daryl[at]worldcupblog[dot]org.
