Saturday Summary: Wayne Rooney is the new Cristiano Ronaldo

By: Daryl | April 28th, 2007

Goal of the day: Clarence Seedorf’s long range stunner for AC Milan against Torino.

Bit of skill: Wayne Rooney doing his best Cristiano Ronaldo impression against Everton. Didn’t go anywhere or beat anyone, but it’s a hell of a way to wind the clock down and make sure Man United take a giant step towards winning the Premiership.

Read on for the rest of Saturday’s highlights:

Great Result: Not Everton 2-4 Man Utd, although that was a huge comeback. Instead the top result has to be West Ham winning 3-0 at Wigan, to go level with them on points and give themselves a serious shot as staying up.

Not so great result: Mark van Bommel (eventually) scored first to put Bayern Munich one-nil up against Hamburg , but then it all went wrong and the famous German club lost 2-1. Now they’re in serious trouble of not making the Champions League next year. Enjoy the suitably techno-ish soundtrack.

Tsk-tsk: Leeds United fans causing trouble. Your team’s being relegated to League One because it’s managed by Dennis Wise. An ’80s hooligan style pitch invasion isn’t going helping any.

It’s a little England-centric today because the Dutch league’s day of reckoning (with 3 teams at the top all on 72 points) isn’t til tomorrow. Ditto the mammoth Sporting vs Benfica game in Portugal and the even mammother Rome derby in Italy. Meanwhile the only bona fide MLS derby happens later tonight when LA Galaxy and Chivas USA face off at the romantically named Home Depot Center.

Let me be the first of what may be many bitter San Jose Earthquakes fans to note that the best derby in MLS used to be San Jose-Los Angeles, until someone got the idea to move the Quakes to Houston.

Seedorf is a genius and, based on the fact that he never ages, evidently a robot as well.

And wow, what a dick Rooney is. I’m surprised he was still standing after pulling that.
