Say It Ain’t So: I’m On Setanta Sports Going Off Air

By: chris | January 9th, 2009

Devastation. That’s the only word to describe it. The world’s greatest cast of puppets are going off air, as through an announcement on their website Setanta has said this Saturday’s show will be their final. Who the hell is going to make Jose Mourinho, Wayne Rooney and Sven so damn lovable? Who?

The announcement:

This Saturday, watch the last episode of the cult chat show “I’m On Setanta Sports” (IOSS) which is coming to an end.

IOSS regulars “IT”, Sven Goran Ericksson and “The Boy”, Wayne Rooney and “Ronnie” Ronaldo will be there to say goodbye. As will regular contributors Sir Alex, Raffa, The Voyeur and David Beckham.

Launched in 2007, IOSS quickly became an inter-web hit knocking up over 2,000,000 views on the YouTube and 1000’s of mentions on blogs and message boards around cyberspace. The show was feted by the New York Times and most recently was voted “Programme of Year 2008” by Hot Press magazine.

Don’t miss the last episode of I’m On Setanta Sports this Saturday.

Having only been on air just over a year, one has to think they’re merely either setting something up or about to announce a big move to a mainstream outfit. But British shows are notoriously brief, never allowing for The Marlon Brando Effect (you know, the lasting image as a ‘bloated’ Dr. Moreau instead of an in-his-prime Terry Malloy). So this very well may be the end.

We can only hope it’s yet another brilliant ruse.

I really hope this is a ruse too.

But if it isn't, why? This show is so successful and brilliant. What am I going to do now after the saturday football?
Just imagine how brilliant the next few episodes could have been, with the Benitez - Ferguson spat, and United vs the Special One in the Champions League...

I really hope this isn't true.

I sure hope you're right about this being a ruse. We can't be without Jose, just as Rafa is showing signs of falling to Sir Alex' mind games. Two more weeks and Rafa's going to succumb to the altitude sickness and ManU will be back on top of the Premiership where they belong :) I can just imagine the show when Rafa has to explain how the Scousers fell from the top rung! Come back Jose and friends. We need you!!

I think the voyeur is innocent of any wrong doing, I think it's the Winston from Jamaica who got It in trouble.. so they had to pull it because of Legal Minefield!

    sad sad day... be champoins!!!

Say it isn't true, My heart has sunken to the depths to the subs bench of hell. Why? Somebody save the comical therapy of the world!

I blame the voyuer for this unacceptable news
  • The apparent lack of explanation WHY the show is going off air is indeed pointing towards a ruse. And what Eric said just now makes it all the more likely.

Kinda makes sense too, because the first rule in television is you DON'T can a show that's successful. There's good shows that get cancelled all the time because of poor audience, and crappy ones staying on the air because <del>idiots</del> people watch them.

And I don't buy the "quit while you're on top" idea...

There is a rumor circulating that this is sort of a ruse -- that this will be the final episode IOSS, but Jose, It and Wayne will return on a show called Special 1 TV. Setanta does have that show listed, one for 5 minutes on Jan. 11 and one for 15 minutes on Jan. 18.

    Shut up Setanta

-Season 1 Phone Convo between Becks and Sven-
Sven: I am with the Special One.
Becks: Ohhh, nice one. What's her name?
Sven: No, no no, David. The Special One...is a man.
Becks: Oh. Um. That's great, Sven.
Jose: Okay, okay, okay, shut up!

Cruel, cruel world this is, taking something with so much quality, and so much obvious support away from football. What am I going to do without my weekly helping of my lovable hapless Sven, the witty antics of Jose, and always illuminating Wayne? It just doesn't make any sense.

Someone at Setanta is going to get a very...firmly worded email, if it's the last thing I do.

    Shut up and be champions.

Nooo... who will tell Sven, Rafa, the Voyeur, and Bremen to shut up? So sad.
  • noooooo : ( time to start a petition and wait for the full length movie version

What will Dave from Newcastle do with his time now. Good thing that Ameobi got a 3 year extension.
  • No! I love this show...
  • The timing on all this is suspect. Why would you have a final episode after a two-plus week lull?

I'm thinking its something contractual between Setanta and the comedians behind the puppets. Hopefully the real reason comes to light and/or the show continues.

    So not fantastic!
