Schalke stumble, Bremen blunder, Stuttgart stay focused

By: Daryl | May 12th, 2007

Seems weird looking at the Bundesliga title race and not seeing Bayern Munich up there, but that’s what’s happening in Gemany.

VFB Stuttgart are now top with just one game to go after they staged a comeback to beat Bochum 3-2 and notch their seventh successive win, with Brazilian Cacau netting the all-important third goal. If that’s not the form of champions then I don’t know what is. Video below, set to the obligatory inappropriate music.

Schalke 04 were top this morning and went into the Ruhr Valley derby against Borussia Dortmund with hopes of being crowned champions for the first time since 1958. But they’ve blown promising Bundesliga leads more than once in the last few years, and they may be about to do it again. They lost 2-0 and now find themselves in second place with just one game to go. “We’re disappointed, obviously, and very sad,” was Schalke coach Mirko Slomka’s summary for reporters. But at least they’re not out of the race altogether. Werder Bremen are, after going down 2-1 at home to Eintracht Frankfurt.

Stuttgart just need a win against Energie Cottbus next week (who even Bayern managed to beat today) to secure the title, while Schalke will need to beat Arminia Bielefeld at home and cross their clumsy fingers for a Stuttgart slip-up.

An exciting contest, right until the very end. Stuttgart has been quietly challenging for the title the whole year and now it’s paid off.

And Mario Gomez — what hunger! Scoring minutes after coming on to the pitch after ten weeks out with injury — he’s fantastic to watch.
