Searching for the Best Footballer Song
By: chris | September 10th, 2008I had the good fortune of rediscovering the infamous German song about Lukas Podolski last night. And then again this morning in the shower. And on the treadmill. And every goddamn 5 minutes inside my head since then. It reminded me of all the awesome and utterly horrendous songs about footballers we’ve been afforded over the years. And I don’t mean choruses heard in the stands. I mean actual, full-length songs like the ones after the jump.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic – Zuperman.
Darren Fletcher – Proclaimers.
Francesco Totti – Anche Io Sono Francesco.
Artur Boruc – The Holy Goalie.
So are there enough out there to launch an Offside Football Player Eurovision? How many notable songs are we missing?

Lem, thanks so much for mentioning the Olli Kahn song — I get a serious ear worm every time I think of it.
Dammit, dammit, DAMMIT, guess what I’m going to be singing all day!
(And I don’t speak German.)

“Goldi Poldi, hallelujah! There is a football god.” Ahhh… he’ll have a song all ready for his new club to sing to him when he hightails it out of Munich.
Another, less excellent but more annoying, song about Kahn: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zgre5-0EObw

chris! This is the first time I know about the Lukas Podolski song. Damn, it’s ringing in my head non-stop.
‘“Goldi Poldi, hallelujah! There is a football god.” Ahhh… he’ll have a song all ready for his new club to sing to him when he hightails it out of Munich.’
Agreed, Juliet.
I have to admit, that is my favourite line. I once play ‘Battle Hymn Of The Republic’ on the piano (this was when I used to take piano lessons) and it’s all coming back to be me now…argh!

The Wedding Present had a whole album called George Best, although nothing in it was about him.
